MPF Requests IBAMA Not to Issue Any Renewals, New License, or Environmental Installation Authorization for Eletronuclear to Start Operations at Angra 3
The MPF prosecutors also demanded that any and all eventual renewals involving the Angra 3 nuclear power plant be suspended in case of non-payment. The main objective of the MPF prosecutors is to prevent Eletronuclear from carrying out any activity involving the Angra 3 power plant.
Finally, the MPF also wishes for the company responsible for the Angra 3 nuclear power plant to present to IBAMA an updated sustainable plan and pay a fine of R$30 million. In a statement, Eletronuclear explained that it has not yet been officially notified of the action and therefore cannot comment at this time.
Angra 3 will be the third plant of the Almirante Álvaro Alberto Nuclear Power Center (CNAAA), located at Itaorna beach in Angra dos Reis (RJ). When it begins commercial operation, the new unit with a capacity of 1,405 megawatts will be able to generate over 12 million megawatt-hours per year, enough energy to supply the cities of Brasília and Belo Horizonte during the same period. With Angra 3, nuclear energy will account for 50% of the consumption of the State of Rio de Janeiro.
