After a life marked by difficulties, child labor, and lack of access to education, a retiree from Teresina fulfilled the dream of learning to read and write, moved colleagues during graduation, and became a symbol of perseverance in Piauí
When many believe they have already closed their major life chapters, Mr. Severino Nascimento da Silva decided to write a new story. After spending decades without access to formal education, the retiree from Teresina, in Piauí, earned a diploma and fulfilled a dream he had carried since childhood: learning to read and write. The emotional journey gained attention after the graduation ceremony of the Alfabetiza Piauí Program, held at the end of May 2026. According to information published by the Só Notícia Boa portal on June 1, 2026, the elderly man’s story moved thousands of Brazilians and became an inspiring example of overcoming obstacles and love for knowledge.
The achievement represents much more than the completion of a school stage. For Mr. Severino, it is the realization of a desire cultivated for more than nine decades. Having never known his father or mother, he faced a childhood marked by poverty and the need to work from a very young age to ensure his own survival.
From a young age, studying seemed like a distant dream. While other children attended school, Severino had to trade notebooks for work. Even so, he never abandoned the desire to learn.

“I started working at six years old, and since then, I have been struggling in this life. I wanted to go to school, but whenever someone enrolled me, they didn’t give me a chance to study,” recalled the retiree.
A difficult childhood and decades without access to education
Mr. Severino’s journey reveals a reality experienced by thousands of Brazilians who grew up without access to basic education. Orphaned from a very young age, he had to work as a child to secure food and sustenance.
Over the years, he built a family, got married, and had seven children. However, the lack of education was always one of the greatest frustrations of his life. According to him, the absence of educational opportunities limited his ability to offer his children everything he would have liked.
Even facing difficulties, he never lost hope of one day learning to write his own name and better understand the world around him. This determination remained alive for decades, just waiting for an opportunity.
And it finally arrived through literacy initiatives aimed at young people, adults, and the elderly in the state of Piauí.
Program literate about 50 thousand people in two years
The graduation took place in Teresina, the capital of Piauí, where Mr. Severino participated in the ceremony alongside approximately a thousand students from the Youth and Adult Education program (EJA), linked to the Alfabetiza Piauí Program.
The initiative has achieved significant results. In just two years, about 50 thousand people from Piauí were literate through the project, which offers transportation, food, and financial incentives to reduce school dropout rates.
The program was created precisely to serve people who, for various reasons, did not have access to education at the appropriate age. In this sense, cases like Mr. Severino’s demonstrate the social impact of the initiative.
Besides teaching reading and writing, the project helps restore self-esteem, independence, and new perspectives for thousands of people throughout the state.
While many participants sought to expand professional opportunities, Mr. Severino carried an even more symbolic mission: to prove that it’s never too late to learn.
The emotional achievement that drew applause and inspiration

During the ceremony, emotion filled the room. The sparkle in Mr. Severino’s eyes highlighted the importance of that historic moment in his life.
After decades of dreaming about a classroom, he finally celebrated his graduation surrounded by teachers, colleagues, and family members.
“Returning to school made me very satisfied. I never imagined experiencing a graduation at this age. I feel very eager to continue studying. I love my teachers, my colleagues, and I am very grateful for this opportunity,” he stated.
The retiree’s words quickly resonated on social media and moved thousands of people. After all, his story represents a powerful message about perseverance, resilience, and the human capacity to start over regardless of age.
More than receiving a certificate, Mr. Severino showed that dreams do not have an expiration date.
And his view on education perfectly summarizes the magnitude of this achievement.
“I have always been very passionate about learning. At the age I am now, I continue to believe that education is above everything.”
An example that transcends generations
The story of Mr. Severino goes beyond the limits of a simple graduation. It reinforces the importance of public policies aimed at literacy and highlights how access to knowledge can transform lives at any stage of existence.
In a country that still faces challenges related to illiteracy among adults and the elderly, examples like this serve as inspiration for thousands of Brazilians who wish to resume their studies.
After a lifetime of work, sacrifices, and obstacles, Mr. Severino achieved something that seemed impossible. His journey shows that education remains one of the most powerful tools for social and personal transformation.
As published by the portal Só Notícia Boa, the ceremony held in Teresina gathered around a thousand graduates and highlighted the advances of the Programa Alfabetiza Piauí, which has already benefited approximately 50,000 people in just two years.
For Mr. Severino, however, the greatest diploma was not the certificate received. It was the certainty that he never gave up on his own dream.
