MRN Wins Gold Seal, Highlighting Transparency in Its Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Sustainable Commitment in the Amazon, with Third-Party Audit According to International Standards.
Mineração Rio do Norte (MRN) once again showcased exemplary performance, securing the Gold Seal for its advanced practices in managing greenhouse gas emissions. This important milestone highlights MRN’s continuous effort in seeking sustainable solutions within the mineral sector, particularly in the Amazon region. The achievement of the Gold Seal not only underscores the company’s operational efficiency but also reinforces its commitment to environmental preservation.
To attain this remarkable award, MRN underwent a rigorous audit conducted by a third party, in accordance with the highest international standards. Such certification is a testament to the company’s commitment to environmentally responsible practices. The award highlights MRN’s position as a leader in decarbonization initiatives, ensuring that the company continues to do its part for a greener and more sustainable future.
This recognition acknowledges the company’s management practices concerning greenhouse gas emissions (GHG), certifying its corporate inventory at the highest qualification level. The certification attests to the transparency and quality of public emission data, reinforcing MRN’s credibility with the market and neighboring communities. Since 2007, MRN has conducted detailed inventories covering all phases of its production chain, from bauxite extraction to shipping, with strict management of its GHG emissions.

Commitment to Emission Management
This year, the company made further advances in its commitment to climate change management by reviewing the emission factor related to vegetation suppression, one of the main sources of CO₂ in its operations. According to Wvagno Ferreira, General Manager of Performance Management, Risk, and Internal Controls at MRN, the Gold Seal certification reaffirms the company’s commitment to transparency and environmental responsibility. ‘The Gold Seal is a recognition that ensures, through third-party audit, that the disclosed information aligns with international standards‘, he states.
Brazilian GHG Protocol Program
The Brazilian GHG Protocol Program, developed in 2008 by the Center for Sustainability Studies of the Getulio Vargas Foundation (FGVces), in collaboration with the World Resources Institute (WRI) and other institutions, is a global reference in GHG emissions management. Obtaining the Gold Seal involves a rigorous audit and verification process, conducted by entities accredited by the National Institute of Metrology, Quality and Technology (Inmetro), ensuring the accuracy and integrity of the disclosed data.
Promoting a More Sustainable Future
As part of its efforts to promote a more sustainable future, MRN aims to reduce its GHG emissions by 23% by 2030, aligning with global standards for climate change mitigation. The company also continues to promote environmental awareness and preservation actions among its employees, reaffirming its commitment to sustainable practices in line with ESG principles (Environmental, Social, and Governance).
Certifications Reinforce Commitment
In addition to the Gold Seal, MRN maintains its operation certified by ISO 14001, which ensures responsible environmental management, and by the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI), reinforcing its commitment to sustainability across the aluminum value chain. ‘These certifications reflect the company’s continuous dedication to operate responsibly, prioritizing safety, health, and respect for the environment and the communities where it operates,’ adds Wvagno Ferreira.
With this extensive recognition and various certifications, it is clear that MRN is not only dedicated to managing its GHG emissions but also to transparency, reliability, and environmental responsibility in all its operations, establishing itself as a model of good practices in the sector.
