Resumption of natural gas project in Mozambique moves billions, creates jobs, and puts the country on the global energy map in a few years

The natural gas megaproject in Mozambique has resumed progress after a 5-year halt, with an investment of R$ 103.6 billion that is drawing worldwide attention.

The resumption of work could create 17,000 jobs, increase the country’s income, and transform Mozambique into one of the main exporters of natural gas starting in 2029, bringing a direct impact on the local economy.

Natural gas project in Mozambique moves billions and promises economic growth

The information was released by Reuters, an international news agency, which detailed the resumption of the Mozambique LNG project in the north of the country.

The venture is considered the largest private investment in Africa’s energy infrastructure, with an estimated cost of US$ 20 billion, equivalent to R$ 103.6 billion.

The project is expected to generate up to US$ 35 billion, about R$ 181.4 billion, in revenue for the government over the years, through taxes and profits.

In addition, economic growth could reach 10% per year when production begins, showing the scale of the impact on the country.

Work was interrupted after a violent attack and has only now resumed

Construction had been halted in 2021 after an attack in the Cabo Delgado region, which resulted in the deaths of about 800 people.

The project site is near the town of Palma, where the violent episode occurred that led the company in charge to suspend all activities.

Now, with greater security in the region, work has resumed and already has more than 4,000 workers, 80% of whom are Mozambican, which reinforces local job creation.

Natural gas production could start in 2029 and change the country’s role in the world

The forecast is that natural gas production will begin in 2029, placing Mozambique among the major global energy exporters.

The project has the potential to strengthen global energy security, as natural gas is widely used in power generation and industry.

The CEO of the company in charge stated that the project could transform the region into a new important source of energy for the planet.

Environmental impacts generate criticism and raise global concerns

Reuters, an international news agency, also highlighted criticism from environmental groups about the project’s impact.

It is estimated that the project will emit about 18 million tons of CO2 per year, potentially reaching up to 4.5 billion tons over decades.

These figures worry experts, as they could hinder the global goal of limiting the planet’s warming.

In addition, there is criticism about the real benefits for the local population, with questions about few permanent jobs and limited access to the energy generated.

Project faces lawsuits and serious allegations

The company involved is also facing lawsuits in France related to human rights violations.

One of the cases involves allegations of torture and deaths that occurred in 2021 at a facility linked to the project.

Another lawsuit deals with an alleged failure to protect workers during the attack that occurred in the town of Palma.

These issues increase international pressure on the project and raise doubts about its management.

Mozambique’s economy increasingly depends on natural resources

Mozambique has about 33 million inhabitants and a low-income economy, with a strong dependence on agriculture.

In recent years, the country has started to invest more in the exploration of natural resources such as gas, coal, and hydroelectric power.

This strategy aims to accelerate economic growth and attract international investment, despite social and environmental challenges.

Resumption of the megaproject could transform the country, but still raises doubts

The return of the natural gas megaproject in Mozambique marks an important moment for the country, with the promise of growth, jobs, and increased revenue.

At the same time, environmental criticisms and legal proceedings show that the project still faces challenges and questions.
