The new immunizer protects against 20 serotypes of the bacteria and reorganizes the prevention strategy in the Brazilian vaccination schedule

An important change in child vaccination was announced by the Ministry of Health and is expected to reach basic health units in June. The pneumo 20 vaccine has begun distribution to states and municipalities, with application expected from the second half of the month. The immunizer protects against 20 serotypes of the Streptococcus pneumoniae bacteria, the main cause of serious diseases such as pneumonia and meningitis. The measure expands the coverage offered by the SUS and strengthens the prevention of conditions that can cause hospitalizations, sequelae, and deaths.

Expansion of the vaccine reveals progress in child protection

The incorporation of pneumo 20 was announced by the Minister of Health, Alexandre Padilha, on Wednesday, the 3rd, after the publication of the technical note and the start of national distribution. The first batch consists of 514 thousand doses, destined for states and municipalities. The Ministry of Health plans to provide more than 6.1 million doses this year. Vaccination will begin as the immunizers reach local networks and are sent to basic health units.

Protection against more severe pneumococcal serotypes

The new vaccine expands immunological protection against serotypes linked to invasive cases, especially types 3, 6A, and 19A. This differential makes the immunizer more comprehensive than previous formulations used in the public network. The pneumo 20 also acts against otitis media, a condition that can cause hearing loss. The immunizer further strengthens the prevention of generalized infections, which can progress to fatal conditions.

Pneumococcal disease data raise an alert in the country

Pneumococcal disease is identified by the World Health Organization as the leading cause of child mortality from preventable disease. In Brazil, between 2023 and 2025, 4.6 thousand cases of pneumococcal meningitis and 1.4 thousand deaths were recorded, with a lethality rate exceeding 30%. Among children under 5 years old, the same period accounted for 616 cases and 188 deaths. The SUS also recorded more than 34 thousand attendances related to diseases caused by pneumococcus between 2024 and October 2025.

Vaccination should reduce hospitalizations and costs in the SUS

Mass vaccination tends to reduce the incidence and mortality from pneumococcal disease. The impact should also reach the SUS costs with hospitalizations, ICU treatments, management of sequelae, and rehabilitation processes. Only in 2025, hospitalizations of children up to 5 years old reached 365 cases. Therefore, the expansion of coverage seeks to reduce the pressure on the public network and protect the most vulnerable groups.

Priority groups will have access to the new vaccine

The pneumo 20 will be offered to children under 5 years old, indigenous peoples over 5 years old without a vaccination history with conjugate pneumo, elderly or more bedridden or institutionalized, and people with special clinical conditions attended at CRIEs. The strategy marks a gradual transition within the SUS vaccination calendar. The VPC13 and VPP23 vaccines will continue to be used in specific strategies until stock is depleted.

Vaccination schedule undergoes gradual adaptation

During the transition period, the basic infant schedule will have one dose of pneumo 20 at 2 months, one dose of pneumo 10 at 4 months, and one booster dose of pneumo 20 at 12 months. The minimum interval between the second dose and the booster will be 60 days. The change expands protection against a greater number of serotypes and reinforces the national strategy for the prevention of pneumococcal diseases.

The arrival of pneumo 20 to the SUS expands the protection of children and priority groups against serious infections caused by pneumococcus. The new stage also reinforces the role of public vaccination in reducing hospitalizations, sequelae, and preventable deaths.
Given this advancement in the Brazilian vaccination calendar, can the expansion of coverage change the impact of pneumonia and meningitis in the coming years?
