Located in Ortigueira, in the state of Paraná, Klabin started today (30/08) the operation of a new machine in the Puma II project
In a relevant fact released this Monday (30/08), Klabin began operations of the first phase of the Puma II project at the industrial unit in the city of Ortigueira, in the state of Paraná. The first phase of the project included the construction of a main fiber line for the production of unbleached pulp integrated with a paper kraftliner and white top liner machine with an annual capacity of 450,000 tons. Next Phase of the Project in the State of Paraná
Alongside the start of operation of MP27, the construction works for the second paper machine of the Puma II Project in Paraná, which is scheduled to start up in 2023, have already begun and are following all safety and hygiene protocols required for the period. MP28 will focus on the production of paperboard, with an annual production capacity of 460,000 tons and consolidates Klabin as a global producer of boards.
The decision for the paperboard machine was announced in May of this year and considers a thorough evaluation of trends, opportunities, and market conditions. “The sector is in a prosperous moment and we assess that it will remain heated in the coming years, driven by the search for more sustainability. The board provides good possibilities for our business, which is integrated, diversified, and flexible. It also allows for the association with barriers, which are growing strongly as an alternative to single-use plastic packaging,” says Flávio Deganutti, director of Papers at Klabin.

The Klabin Puma Project
The Puma I Project in Paraná was designed to double Klabin’s production capacity over a period of three years. The Puma Unit, resulting from Project Puma I, had a total investment of R$ 8.5 billion, allocated to the construction of the factory, which was inaugurated in 2016 and established as the largest private enterprise in Paraná until then.
The unit in Ortigueira, Paraná, is self-sufficient in electric power generation, with a capacity of 270 MW of electricity (120 MW are used by Klabin and the other 150 MW are made available to the Brazilian electric system). In comparison, the generated electricity is enough to supply a city of 500,000 inhabitants.
The Puma II Project will have two phases of expansion until 2023, including the construction of two innovative paper machines (already mentioned above). The project will make Klabin the first company to produce Eukaliner paper worldwide. In the project located in Paraná, around 9,000 jobs were generated during the construction, and 1,500 will be generated, directly and indirectly, when the Puma II unit begins operations.
The Largest Private Investment in the History of Paraná
The Puma project plant is located in Campos Gerais, in the municipality of Ortigueira, state of Paraná. The project will receive an investment of R$ 2.6 billion, allocated for the installation of a paperboard machine and no longer for kraftliner (initially planned).
With this additional investment announced by Klabin in Paraná, the enterprise now totals around R$ 12.9 billion, considered the largest investment in Klabin’s history. The kraftliner machine is scheduled to start in the second half of July this year, and MP28 (the second machine) is expected to begin operations in the second quarter of 2023, focusing on serving the paperboard market.
