Innovative Initiative Turns Ocean Waste into Ecological Brick, Offering a Sustainable Solution for Civil Construction and Generating Income. Project Already Has Recognition from Sudene and Tends to Grow Even More!
For every kilogram of seafood collected in Igarassu, an impressive 15 kg of shells are discarded, creating mountains of waste that accumulate along beaches, rivers, and communities in the region. But instead of viewing this as a problem, a group of researchers from the Federal Rural University of Pernambuco and local entrepreneurs saw an opportunity: turning waste into a valuable resource for civil construction. This is how the shell brick was born, a sustainable material that is cheaper and also helps clean the environment, according to the website flipar.
The project, which started as an environmental solution, is already generating jobs and income, especially for the shellfish harvesters who now see a more promising future. Let’s better understand this story and the impact it is causing?
Shells Turned into Brick: A Sustainable Revolution
What to do with the tons of discarded shells? This was the major question faced by the shellfish harvesters of Igarassu. The shells, which once polluted the environment, are now the main raw material for the ecological brick. The manufacturing process involves grinding the shells, mixing them with soil and cement, and then pressing this mixture in special machines. The result? Modular and perforated bricks, ready to be used in construction.

In addition to helping the environment, the shell brick offers a significant economic advantage: it costs 20% less than conventional bricks. And the best part? It does not require plastering, as it only needs resin applied to the wall. In other words, it is cheaper, sustainable, and also makes the construction process easier.
Tested and Approved: Ecological Bricks Are Gaining the Market
The manufacturing of these bricks takes place in a local factory, which already has the capacity to produce up to 1,500 bricks per day. The trend is that production will increase even more, as the project was recognized by Sudene (Superintendence for the Development of the Northeast) as one of the best solutions in biotechnology and bioeconomy in the Northeast. With this recognition, the project is expected to receive funding of R$ 80 thousand, allowing for the expansion of production and the generation of even more jobs.

The shell bricks are already being used in the construction of benches and other structures, and the impact of the initiative goes far beyond construction projects. For the shellfish harvesters, who previously lived on a minimum wage from collection, the project’s expansion represents a chance to improve their quality of life and secure new job opportunities.
Ecological Brick: Sustainability and Innovation in Civil Construction
The ecological brick, also known as soil-cement brick, is an innovation that is gaining ground in civil construction. The fundamental difference is that it does not require a burning process, which reduces environmental impact. Additionally, its modular fittings eliminate the need for mortar between layers, making the construction process faster and more efficient.
It is worth noting that the use of sustainable materials in construction is a global trend. The search for solutions that reduce environmental impact and repurpose resources that would otherwise be discarded has driven the development of new products, such as the shell brick.
The History of Bricks: From Ancient Times to Present Day
It may be surprising, but bricks have a long history that dates back to 7000 BC! In Mesopotamia, the first civilizations were already shaping clay blocks and drying them in the sun to build their cities. Over time, the process evolved, and burning bricks in kilns made them more durable, allowing for the construction of sturdier structures.

Today, we have a variety of bricks for different purposes, such as solid brick, Bahian brick, and ceramic block, among others. But the ecological brick is gaining more and more prominence for its sustainable advantages. Just as the bricks of antiquity helped build civilizations, the shell bricks have the potential to shape a more sustainable future for civil construction in Brazil.
With such a positive impact on both the environment and the local economy, the shell brick is more than a creative solution: it is an example of how sustainability can be a driver for innovation and social development. And all of this started from an unlikely place: the discarded shells on the beaches of Igarassu!
