A Giant Dam Is Under Construction in the Interior of São Paulo and Promises to Change the Water Scenario in Dozens of Cities. With Billions of Liters of Capacity and Technology to Clean the River, the Project Will Also Impact the Lives of Those Who Depend on the Road
The construction of the Duas Pontes Dam, in Amparo (SP), has reached 44% completion. The work promises to transform water security in the Campinas region, directly benefiting about 5.5 million people. Delivery is scheduled for the end of 2026.
With a capacity to store 53.4 billion liters of water — equivalent to 21.4 thousand Olympic swimming pools — the dam aims to significantly increase the flow of the Camanducaia River.
The flow, which is currently 3.4 thousand liters per second, will increase to 8.7 thousand liters per second, representing a 155% increase.

A R$ 25 million bridge in Santa Catarina will replace a ferry at a tourist spot, cross the Araranguá River, gain two lanes, LED lighting, and create a new road connection with construction authorized in 2026.

The Duas Pontes Dam is part of a set of waterworks totaling R$ 806 million in investments in the region, also including the construction of the Pedreira Dam.
The two dams, when connected to the Regional Adductor System (SAR), will have a combined capacity to store 85 billion liters of water — equivalent to 34.2 thousand Olympic swimming pools — and will reinforce the supply for 28 municipalities.
In addition, R$ 522 million are expected for environmental initiatives to ensure the preservation of water resources.
Enhancing Water Security
According to the Secretary of the Environment, Infrastructure and Logistics of São Paulo, Natália Resende, the project represents a strategic milestone for the state.
“The Duas Pontes Dam represents a fundamental strategic milestone for the water security of the region, not only by providing the storage of a significant volume of water but also by increasing the flow of the Camanducaia River by more than 150%,” she stated.
The secretary emphasized that the project reinforces the resilience of the supply system, especially in light of climate variations and population growth.
UTR Camanducaia
During the visit, the secretary also monitored the progress of the works of the River Treatment Unit (UTR) Camanducaia, a R$ 241 million project aimed at reducing 96% of the impurities present in the river’s waters.
The structure will be responsible for treating diffuse sources of pollution — such as urban and industrial waste — and will contribute to improving water quality in the dam’s reservoir, benefiting all municipalities that use the river as a source of supply.
The result will be a direct improvement in the quality of life for the region’s population.
“SP Águas’ involvement in the Duas Pontes and Pedreira dams reaffirms our commitment to water security and the responsible management of resources in the Campinas region and surrounding areas. We are working to ensure that these structures fulfill their strategic role in the storage and regulation of water use, guaranteeing greater stability for the supply to the population. It is an investment that combines planning and care for future generations.,” says Camila Viana, CEO of SP Águas.
With completion expected in July 2026, the works represent a significant advance in the management of the state’s water resources, uniting infrastructure, sustainability, and well-being for residents.
