This Is Not a Suitcase, It’s a Portable Battery Here to Save the Lives of Electric Car Owners. Technology Will Be Launched in 2022 and Can Be Charged at Home!

The anxiety of range is still one of the most used arguments to doubt the purchase of an electric car. What if I’m stranded in the middle of nowhere and there are no chargers? Richie Sibal and Jonathan Carrier, two electronics experts, propose to solve it with a suitcase battery.

32 Extra Kilometers That Can Save You from Trouble

Just as we can have a drum of gasoline in the trunk of the car for emergencies, this suitcase called ZipCharge would provide some extra charge to solve range issues for electric cars in trouble. It even comes with wheels for easy transport.

In more technical terms, we are looking at a 4 kWh battery, capable of providing an electric car with a maximum additional range of 32 km (depending on the model) with one hour of charging. More than enough for those who dread getting stranded with a dead battery a short distance from a charging point.

Charging the suitcase itself can be done at home with a traditional plug, and a mobile app can show the charge status both at that plug and while charging the car. In fact, the port it includes is bidirectional, designed to store energy on the main grid when it is most generated and provide it when it is lacking.

Currently, the idea is to launch the first units of this ZipCharge at the end of 2022, either in a single payment or with the option to subscribe for around 58 euros per month. As an option to have in the trunk in case of an emergency, it could be useful.
