Camil Alimentos S.A, a Brazilian Food Company, Will Build a Biomass Power Plant Fueled by Rice Husk
The forecast is that the new facility will start operating in 2023. Camil will build the thermoelectric plant with R$ 150 million raised from its first issuance of representative credit securities (debentures). “Rice husk has a high calorific value and thermal regularity suitable for the production of thermoelectric processes, being a more sustainable alternative to fossil fuels,” stated the company.

The food company is already investing in its own energy generation, which accounted for 43% of the energy consumed by the company in the last year.
The renewable biomass energy generation is done through the volume of husks from industrial processing, as Camil specializes in the processing of rice and beans.

In Brazil, 95% of the energy consumed at Camil Alimentos’ facilities comes from renewable sources. With the new power plant in operation, the company will increase its capacity for generating clean energy, contributing to the reduction of environmental pollution.
“Staying up to date with the best market practices through innovative solutions to expand clean energy sources and generate greater energy efficiency in Latin America is among the most relevant issues for Camil’s environmental management,” says the official industry statement to the market, published on November 30, 2021.
About Camil Alimentos S.A.
Founded in 1963 by Jairo Santos Quartiero, Camil Alimentos S.A is a food industry specialized in the production of rice and beans, being a leader in the sector in the country and in South America.
Over the years, the company has been investing in its own renewable energy generation, having two small thermoelectric power plants located in Itaqui and Capão do Leão (RS). With the goal of continuously increasing its power generation capacity, Camil registered an annual increase of 7% until February 2021.
With the new biomass plant in operation, the expectation is that this number will gradually grow.
In addition to the production and commercialization of grains, Camil also offers a diversified portfolio of brands in the sugar and fish sectors, as well as leading positions in Brazil, Uruguay, Chile, and Peru.
