Azul Announces Launch of New Route to Serve Mining Company and Railway in Bahia
Azul Brazilian Airlines announced that it plans to debut a new multi-stop route that will connect the interior of Bahia with Cessna Caravan aircraft soon. According to information released by Aeroin, the flights operated by the subsidiary Azul Conecta are still being conducted sporadically, connecting Guanambi and Salvador to Montes Claros in Minas Gerais. However, there will be a change in the routes to primarily serve the company Bahia Mineração (Bamin).
Why Does Azul Want to Support Mining in Bahia?
With a large hematite and itabirite extraction operation in the regions of Caetité and Guanambi in Bahia, Pedra de Ferro – implemented by Bamin – is the most important iron mining project under development in Bahia. According to the company’s website, Bamin will extract minerals sustainably, as they are spread over an area of 8,243.25 hectares, and it assures that it will maintain a Legal Reserve and Forest Compensation area of 4,047.0215 hectares.
Additionally, the Bahia-based company has begun the construction of a railway with a length of 1,527 kilometers, which will connect Porto Sul (operated by Bamin itself) to the Bahia cities of Caetité and Barreiras, as well as Figueirópolis in Tocantins – the East-West Integration Railway (FIOL). The railway is one of the main infrastructure projects under construction in Bahia, which also makes the region susceptible to investments.

When Will Azul’s New Route with a Stop in Bahia Start?
The debut of the new route by Azul is expected to occur as quickly as possible to meet the demand from Bahia’s mining sector. As reported by Aeroin, the flights will start soon and will operate three times a week (on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays) on the Salvador – Jequié – Guanambi – Ilhéus – Salvador route, to provide the necessary support for mineral extraction, the construction of the East-West Integration Railway (FIOL), and Porto Sul.
