XPeng Just Launched Its New Ultracharger Capable of Refueling an Electric Car in Just 5 Minutes. The Company Aims to Make the Presence of Electric Vehicles More Common on the Streets.
To celebrate its eighth anniversary, XPeng launched its new ultracharger for electric cars in China, which aims to significantly reduce the refueling time of electrified models. The new S4 product from XPeng, first announced at the end of last year, has a maximum power of 480 kW. In the presentation, the company demonstrated a charging session of its newly launched XPeng G9 model, the first electric car capable of utilizing much of the potential of the new charger.
XPeng Already Has 1,000 Electric Car Chargers Installed
The company’s electric car managed to charge 210 km of range in just 5 minutes. Initially, the charging started at over 150 kW, equivalent to more than 640 Volts. Within moments, the charging power was increased to over 400 kW in about 1 minute. A level of over 440 kW was reached after 3 and a half minutes, equivalent to about 700 V.
The result achieved with the electric car is excellent for XPeng, making the product likely the best commercially available in the Asian country.

The company has also gained an advantage over its rival Tesla Supercharges, which reach 250 kW in the V3 version, and also the Porsche Taycan, which charges up to 270 kW. The first XPeng S4 ultracharger was installed at the Sunac Mall in Guangzhou and is also the company’s thousandth charging point, which has 799 DC chargers and 201 destination charging points, located in 337 cities across China.
Ultracharger Will Be Available in 10 Cities in China
In the short term, XPeng plans to focus on installing ultrachargers for electric cars in 10 cities with the highest number of G9 orders. Next year, the product will be installed in major cities and along main highways, while by 2025 the company plans to install 2,000 S4 chargers for electric cars.
With the arrival of new 800 V electric car models with large batteries, XPeng’s new chargers are expected to significantly improve charging performance and make BEV recharging on long-distance trips more similar to refueling a normal combustion car. Meanwhile, Europe and North America are currently expanding their CCS networks, generally producing up to 350 kW, but there is greater potential in the future.
Wireless Chargers May Soon Arrive in the Automotive Market
Wireless charging will be an important technology to make electric cars increasingly present on the streets, thus, Siemens and Mahle have formed a partnership to develop new projects.
The efforts of the two technology sector companies focus on creating a single standard to make wireless chargers for electric cars more accessible and less complex. The goal of both companies is to create a charging infrastructure and hardware that will allow both parties to act as a standard for the entire vehicle industry.
The technical development of such systems will be coordinated with automotive brands and infrastructure partners to drive operations and create technologies on a global level. Overall, wireless chargers are of great interest to various companies in the electric car sector.
