New Electric Motor Produced in Portugal Promises to Revolutionize the Automotive Market. The New Propulsor Works Both Electrically and Hybrid.
New news is exciting the automotive sector. It is about the announcement of the start of production of a new electric motor produced in Portugal. HORSE, the automotive solutions division of Renault, has begun the production of a new compact propulsor at its factory in Aveiro, Portugal. In this article, we will understand why this new electric motor could change the electric market.
New Propulsor from HORSE Delivers Up to 66 Horsepower
The new electric motor produced in Portugal was developed for applications in full hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles, offering 49 kW (66 hp) and torque of 212 Nm (21.6 kgfm). In fully electric mode, it allows vehicles to reach speeds of up to 130 km/h.
The new propulsor was developed to operate in conjunction with internal combustion engines from the HR12, HR16, and HR18 series from HORSE. Its configuration allows installation between the combustion engine and the transmission, supporting two modes of operation, being fully electric and hybrid.

With a twin-cylinder engine of 49.6 hp and a range exceeding 400 km, the new Honda NX500 2027 debuts with a 5” TFT panel, Showa suspension, HSTC torque control, dual-channel ABS, and unlimited mileage warranty.
According to Patrice Haettel, CEO of HORSE, the new electric motor produced in Portugal reinforces the company’s commitment to delivering efficient propulsion systems, using the latest technologies. With its compact design and ability to operate in fully electric mode, this new powerful and efficient propulsor is ideal for various types of hybrid vehicles. Once again, HORSE demonstrates its expertise as the ideal partner for its clients in their electrification journeys.
Understand the Objective of HORSE with Its New Electric Motor
In electric mode, the electric motor produced in Portugal directly drives the vehicle’s wheels. In hybrid mode, the new propulsor works in conjunction with the internal combustion engine, contributing to the system’s energy efficiency. During deceleration, the motor acts as a generator, converting electrical energy into energy stored in the battery.
To make the production of the new motor viable, the Aveiro factory received investments in four new production lines, allowing for the manufacturing of up to 160,000 units per year. One of the technologies implemented is a winding machine with three heads, developed to optimize the assembly of the motor core.
HORSE stated that the new facilities and technologies were developed to meet the growing demand for hybrid and electric propulsion systems, aligning with changes in the global automotive market. Each production line was designed for specific steps, such as machining motor components (housing, rotor shaft, and magnets) and final assembly.
The strategy reinforces the company’s position as a leader in the electrified propulsion sector, offering versatile solutions to meet the demands of OEMs and end consumers. With advanced design, impressive performance, and efficient production, the new electric motor produced in Portugal promises to redefine the standards of hybrid and plug-in vehicles in the global market.
Plans of the Renault Subsidiary for the Brazilian Market
In September, HORSE announced a new investment of R$ 200 million for the nationalization of the production of engine cylinder heads at its plant in São José dos Pinhais (PR).
This investment reinforces the company’s commitment to expanding its production chain in Brazil, focusing on 100% national production of the 1.3 turbo engine HR13, which began in November 2024.
This new production line will be responsible for producing 210,000 cylinder heads per year, using a gravity casting process, which provides greater efficiency and high quality standards. HORSE also expects to create 60 new jobs by 2026 with the full operation of the line.
