New Mercedes Engine Is Made In China And Promises Up To 20 Km/L. Global Partnership, Innovative Technology And Top Efficiency
Mercedes-Benz revealed details about the new Mercedes engine, a 2.0 turbo mild hybrid that promises to impress not only with its performance but also with its efficiency, achieving averages of up to 20 km/l. Developed with a focus on sustainability and innovation, the engine is part of the new FAME (Family of Modular Engines) family and will be produced in China, in partnership with the joint venture Horse, founded by Renault and Geely.
This strategic move shows that, while many brands are advancing towards total electrification, Mercedes is betting on an intermediate solution: more efficient and less polluting combustion engines. The highlight is the M252, the first engine of the family, which combines a 48-volt mild hybrid system and an innovative Miller cycle, resulting in a high compression ratio and significant fuel savings.
What Makes The New M252 Engine So Special

The new Mercedes engine uses the Miller cycle, an advanced technology that increases fuel consumption efficiency in low load situations, such as urban traffic. Compared to the traditional Otto cycle, the Miller closes the intake valves later, maximizing compression and reducing fuel waste.

Additionally, the 48-volt mild hybrid system, with a 27 hp electric motor, not only assists at low speeds but also enables “sailing” mode, where the car can coast at speeds of up to 100 km/h. The system also recovers up to 25 kW of energy, enhancing efficiency and reducing emissions.
Produced In China, But With Global DNA
The engine will be manufactured in China, marking another global partnership for Mercedes. The joint venture Horse, which brings together Renault and Geely, will be responsible for production, consolidating the importance of the Asian market in the German automaker’s strategy. The M252 will debut in the new CLA, expected to arrive at the end of 2025 or early 2026, initially prioritizing the electric version of the model.
Innovation That Promises To Redefine The Experience
Another highlight of the new Mercedes engine is the advancement in the turbocharging system, which uses a segmented turbine with a switchable scroll connection, increasing efficiency at low RPM. Mercedes also worked on noise reduction, implementing greater acoustic insulation and double partitions, features already seen in its more luxurious models.
According to the automaker, the M252 will be available in three power versions: 136 hp, 163 hp, and 190 hp, with the possibility of more powerful variations in the future.
With an estimated average consumption of 20 km/l, the new Mercedes engine is set to rival diesel engines in efficiency, while maintaining the brand’s characteristic performance and comfort. It is an innovation that reflects the pursuit of sustainability without compromising performance, bringing China as a key player in this new era of engines.
