If there’s a brand that knows how to make a robust SUV, that brand is Toyota. And now, the Japanese automaker is preparing another member for the Land Cruiser line, a smaller model, but with great potential to compete with the Ford Bronco Sport. The new Toyota SUV, nicknamed Land Cruiser FJ, promises to combine off-road capability and affordable cost, following the manufacturer’s tradition of creating vehicles ready for any type of terrain.
When we talk about off-road vehicles, we can’t leave the Land Cruisers out. Toyota knows this and continues to invest in models that deliver strength and reliability. The new Toyota SUV made its official debut in a teaser released in 2023, showing that it will be the smallest member of the Land Cruiser family, but still maintaining the line’s distinctive features.
In the images, we can see a robust design with straight lines, chunky tires, and the classic spare tire on the tailgate. But it seems that the final version will be a bit larger, featuring a more generous wheelbase for better stability and comfort. If confirmed, it will be about 4.50 meters long, surpassing the Ford Bronco Sport, which measures 4.38 meters.
Platform and Structure: What Is the Base of the New Toyota SUV?
Unlike the Land Cruiser 250 and 300, which use the TNGA-F platform, the new Toyota SUV will be built on the IMV 0 base, the same used in the Toyota Hilux Champ. This choice makes perfect sense, as it allows for maintaining a more affordable cost while still offering excellent off-road performance.

Powertrain: What to Expect from the New Land Cruiser FJ?
This is where the most controversial part begins. Initially, rumors indicated that Toyota might offer hybrid and even electric versions. However, more recent sources suggest that the brand may have set those options aside, focusing on a conventional combustion engine.
If confirmed, the model should be equipped with a 2.7-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine (code 2TR-FE), the same as the Hilux Champ. This engine delivers 161 hp and 25 kgfm of torque, coupled to a six-speed automatic transmission. While it may not be one of the most powerful in its category, it is a reliable, robust, and easy-to-maintain engine.
Still, there are chances that Toyota will offer an electrified version for markets like North America and Europe, where the demand for hybrid and electric engines is higher.
Launch and Prices: When and How Much?
The initial expectation was that the new Toyota SUV would launch at the end of 2024, but strategic changes by the automaker have postponed this debut. Now, it seems that the model will be introduced in Japan during fall 2025, with a global launch shortly after.
Regarding prices, it is speculated that the Land Cruiser FJ will cost between US$ 26,600 and US$ 30,000. In direct conversion, this means something between R$ 142,552 and R$ 171,063, excluding taxes and fees. This price range positions the model as a strong competitor to the Ford Bronco Sport and other mid-sized SUVs aimed at off-road.
