What If The Human Body Traveled At The Speed Of Light? Physics Shows That It Would Cause Extreme Effects, Making Existence As We Know It Impossible

In science fiction, it is common to see spaceships breaking the barriers of time and space. They travel at the speed of light, disappear in seconds, and cross galaxies. But in real life, this scenario is far from happening. Current science points out that reaching the speed of light is physically impossible.

According to physics professor Gerd Kortemeyer from Michigan State University, this speed is a natural limit. It is approximately 299,792,458 meters per second.

Only massless particles can reach this number. No object with mass, such as a spaceship or a human being, can move that fast.

Traveling At The Speed Of Light: Physical And Energetic Challenges

To try to get close to this speed, a perfect fuel would be necessary. This fuel would have to convert all of its mass into energy, with no loss.

Even so, the numbers are absurd. Taking a 10 metric ton spaceship to 99% of the speed of light would require more than 200 times all the energy that the Earth consumes in a year.

Besides the energy problem, there is the impact on the human body. To accelerate to the speed of light, one would have to withstand enormous gravitational forces.

Today, humans can withstand 4 to 6 times the force of Earth’s gravity for a few seconds. Above that, for long periods, the risk is death. Internal organs would be crushed by the pressure.

What Would Change During The Journey?

Even if it were possible to reach the speed of light, the effects would be intense. The first would be the visual effect. Due to a phenomenon called the Doppler effect, the colors of objects would change.

Everything in front would appear blue. Objects that lagged behind would appear red. This change occurs because the wavelength of light would be compressed or stretched.

Another impact would be on the perception of time. Einstein’s theory of relativity predicts that time passes more slowly for those moving at extreme speeds. This means that a journey lasting two minutes for those inside the spaceship could correspond to six days on Earth.

The Human Body Would Not Withstand The Speed Of Light

Even with all possible technology, the human body would likely not withstand such a journey. The forces involved are far beyond what we can endure.

The circulatory system, the internal organs—everything would be affected. The human body was built to live with Earth’s gravity. Outside of that, the risks increase significantly.

Therefore, although it is fascinating to imagine this possibility, it remains only that: an idea from science fiction. No current study evidences a realistic way to overcome this natural limit.

What Science Is Seeking Today

Despite these barriers, space exploration continues to advance. Scientists are developing new forms of propulsion. Fusion engines and ion propulsion are two of the bets. These systems are still far from reaching the speed of light, but they can significantly accelerate space travel.

These innovations promise to make missions faster and safer. The goal is not to achieve the impossible, but to improve what is already viable. Exploring Mars, traveling for long periods in space, and reducing mission times are closer goals.

Limit That Has Not Been Broken Yet

So far, the speed of light remains an absolute limit. Nothing with mass can cross it. It is a barrier imposed by the laws of physics as we know them. Any attempt to break this requires too much energy and puts human life at risk.

The future may bring new discoveries. But for now, traveling at the speed of light remains just a distant dream. The reality of space exploration lies in seeking safer paths, even if they are slower.
