With the Conclusion of the Works Expected for 2027, the Project Reinforces the Strategic Role of BR-280 for Mobility in Santa Catarina.
The works to duplicate BR-280, one of the main federal highways in Santa Catarina, have already mobilized R$ 677 million in investments in the project’s most complex section.
Located between Jaraguá do Sul and Schroeder, section 2.2 of the highway is still under construction and is expected to be completed by the end of 2027, according to the National Department of Transport Infrastructure (DNIT).
Billion-Dollar Investment in Infrastructure in Northern SC
With a total estimated budget of R$ 985.1 million, this segment of BR-280 is considered the most challenging for duplication.

Mobile bridges in the Netherlands transform streets into passages for boats and reveal how sensors, counterweights, and operators make tons of steel move out of the way without disrupting the routine of cyclists, cars, pedestrians, and historic canals in cities where water also functions as a road.

Instead of waiting months for construction, Ecocapsule transforms a metal capsule into an off-grid micro-home with solar power, a bathroom with a shower, a compact kitchen, and its own system for living off the grid.
The route includes 24 kilometers of new roadway, in addition to the construction of a double tunnel over a thousand meters long in each direction — an unprecedented project in the region.
So far, 68.8% of the work has been completed, and the coming years will require around R$ 300 million more to complete the services.
One of the sections of the new bypass, near the access to the Rice Highway, has already been partially opened to traffic. However, DNIT’s plan is to allow complete vehicle circulation only after the full completion of the section, ensuring safety and smooth traffic flow.
Other Construction Fronts on BR-280
In addition to the section between Jaraguá do Sul and Schroeder, other parts of the federal highway are also underway:
In Guaramirim, the duplication of 14 kilometers is in progress, with delivery expected by 2026;
The section connecting Araquari to São Francisco do Sul has been stalled since 2022, awaiting an update on the executive project.
Duplication of BR-280: Benefits for All of Santa Catarina
The modernization of BR-280 is seen as essential for the state’s logistics. The main expected gains from the duplication include:
Reduction of accidents and increased road safety;
Speeding up cargo transport, benefiting the industrial sector;
Alleviation of urban traffic in surrounding cities;
More efficient integration between the coast and northern Santa Catarina.
According to DNIT, the project is a priority within the federal investment plan for infrastructure in the state.
“The duplication will transform mobility in the region and ensure a better quality of life for those who rely on BR-280 every day,” the agency stated.
With defined deadlines and active work fronts, the duplication of BR-280 reaffirms the commitment to development and safety on the roads of Santa Catarina.
