New International Airport in Olímpia Promises to Transform Tourism and Logistics in the Interior of São Paulo, with Billion-Dollar Investment, Large Runway, and Capacity to Receive Domestic and International Flights.

The city of Olímpia, known as the “Brazilian Orlando,” in the northwest of São Paulo, has taken another step toward the construction of an international airport.

The National Historical and Artistic Heritage Institute (Iphan) issued a favorable technical opinion on the project, allowing progress to the next stages of licensing and commencement of construction, according to Infraero and the City Hall of Olímpia.

The initial investment is estimated at R$ 500 million, with resources from the Growth Acceleration Program (PAC).

Licensing and Project Timeline

With Iphan’s approval, the project enters the environmental licensing phase and the elaboration of executive projects.

According to information from the state government, the goal is to begin construction as soon as the legal procedures are completed and federal funds are released.

The Northern São Paulo International Airport, as it has been named, will be built on an area of 200 hectares, about 20 kilometers from the urban center.

The project includes a 2,100-meter-long by 45-meter-wide runway, with the possibility of expansion to 2,500 meters, according to Infraero’s technical studies.

The structure has been designed to accommodate large aircraft, including cargo and international flights.

According to the company, the estimated capacity is 1 million passengers per year, serving not only the interior of São Paulo but also parts of Minas Gerais, Mato Grosso, and Goiás.

Documentary and Institutional Stages

In March 2025, Infraero completed the registration of the new airport’s CNPJ, a necessary step to formalize the project and enable bidding processes and contracts.

The project also already has its own ZIP code, linked to the area designated for construction.

These registrations are part of the procedures required by federal and state regulatory agencies.

According to the Ministry of Ports and Airports, execution will depend on the release of budget funds by the Union.

After this stage, the bidding notice will be published to select the company responsible for the construction.

Regional Connections and Logistical Impact

The location of Olímpia is considered strategic by aviation sector specialists, as it allows direct connection with important productive and tourist hubs in the interior of São Paulo and neighboring states.

Infrastructure experts point out that the terminal can serve as a logistical integration point between agricultural and industrial regions, reducing travel to the airports of São Paulo and Ribeirão Preto.

The state government also included the duplication of the Assis Chateaubriand Highway (SP-425) in the planning of road works, a measure that will facilitate access to the future terminal.

The Department of Highways (DER-SP) reported that the detailed project for the duplication is already in the drafting phase, with interventions planned for the connecting stretches to Olímpia.

Tourism and Local Infrastructure

Olímpia is already one of the main tourist destinations in the country, according to data from the São Paulo Tourism Secretariat.

The city receives around 5 million visitors per year and has 35,000 beds in the hotel network.

The flow is driven by two large water parks — Thermas dos Laranjais and Hot Beach — among the largest in Latin America.

In 2025, Thermas dos Laranjais announced the creation of a new leisure complex with water attractions, a gastronomic area, and a commercial gallery, set to open in the second half of the year.

According to industry entrepreneurs, the airport is expected to enhance the destination’s connectivity and attract tourists from other states and countries in South America.

The city is also investing in complementary works, such as the construction of a convention center and the duplication of the SP-425, aiming to strengthen infrastructure geared towards tourism and corporate events.

Operational Profile and Airport Capacity

According to information from Infraero, the terminal has been designed to accommodate both domestic and international operations.

The project includes areas for boarding, disembarking, aircraft parking, and cargo transport.

The runway, with the planned dimensions, will be able to accommodate medium and large commercial jets.

The expectation is that the airport will contribute to the interiorization of air transport and to the regional economic development.

Technicians consulted by the government believe that the project will generate direct and indirect jobs during the construction and operation phases, with a positive impact on tourism and the local service chain.

Next Steps and Bidding

Infraero is awaiting the release of funds from the Union to launch the bidding notice that will define the company responsible for the construction.

After hiring, land leveling and construction of the first structures will begin.

According to the preliminary schedule, the initial phase of the project — which includes runway, apron, and passenger terminal — is expected to be completed within two years after the commencement of construction.

The anticipated operational start date remains set for 2026, according to the timelines presented by the state company and municipality.

The state government states that the project is one of the main infrastructure initiatives in the interior of São Paulo and is part of the planning for the expansion of the national airport network.

The new airport is expected to consolidate Olímpia as one of the main tourist and logistical hubs in the region.

Aviation sector specialists emphasize that the success of the operation will depend on the availability of regular flights and efficient integration with the highways and parks that support the flow of visitors.
