Guyana Invests In A 500 Km Superhighway, With 50 Bridges And Billion-Dollar Investment, To Drastically Reduce Transport Time To Brazil And Open The Way To A Market Of 20 Million Consumers.

Guyana has launched the paving of a road corridor of 500 km, with about 50 bridges and an estimated investment of R$ 5 billion, to connect Georgetown to the border with Roraima.

The official goal is to reduce a logistics route that currently can take up to 21 days to 48 hours, connecting to the market of 20 million consumers in Northern Brazil.

The project is treated as a national priority amid a growth cycle driven by oil.

Connection With Roraima And Palmyra Port

The road improves the connection with the bridge over the Tacutu River, which already links Lethem (Guyana) to Bonfim (RR).

It is also connected to a deep-water port in Palmyra (Berbice), in northeastern Guyana, currently under construction.

This port infrastructure is a complementary piece to shorten the time for shipping cargo from Brazil to the Atlantic.

Route From 21 Days To 48 Hours

According to the Guyana government, paving the route to the border and the entry into operation of the port should drastically reduce the time needed to transport goods from Northern Brazil to the sea.

Today, transportation is primarily done through extensive river routes.

With the highway and the port, the window would drop to about two days, according to the Ministry of Public Works.

On the internal stretch, the land trip between Georgetown and Lethem currently takes an average of 15 hours under favorable conditions.

Four Sections And 50 Bridges

The government structured the intervention in four sections, which include replacing wooden bridges with concrete structures.

It is also planned to eliminate bottlenecks such as the ferry crossing on the Essequibo River, in the town of Kurupukari.

In total, about 50 bridges are planned. The most optimistic timeline cited by authorities indicates completion by 2030.

Where Construction Has Advanced

A key stage, Linden–Mabura Hill (approx. 121 km), was contracted in 2022 with the Brazilian construction company Queiroz Galvão.

Funding is from the Caribbean Development Bank and has contributions from the United Kingdom.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Public Works has auctioned and is executing packages for dozens of bridges between Kurupukari and Lethem.

These works replace old structures and prepare the bed for the full paving of the corridor.

Expansion Of Trade With Brazil

On the Brazilian side, the highway integrates into the Roraima network and opens an alternative access to the sea for the North Arc.

On the Guyanese side, the government views the connection with the Tacutu Bridge as a gateway to a regional market of 20 million people.

The expectation is to increase bilateral flow, currently led by oil and construction inputs, according to experts.

Accelerated GDP Growth

Since 2020, Guyana has recorded double-digit growth, anchored in offshore production.

The country has a population of about 800,000 inhabitants, concentrated in the coastal strip.

In 2024, GDP grew by 43.6%, measured by the statistical authority. Projections maintain a high pace, even if slowing down.

The economic leap, however, demands investments in qualification, education, and services for the gains to reach the population.

Strategic Weight Of The Road

In addition to the economic vector, authorities admit a geopolitical component.

Improving land access through the interior can expedite movements to the Essequibo region, territory managed by Guyana and claimed by Venezuela.

The opening of a safe and permanent route facilitates the state’s presence in remote areas, with mining and timber potential.

Challenges Of The Schedule

The complete package is estimated at almost US$ 1 billion and depends on environmental and engineering approvals for bridges over large rivers. Sections subject to seasonal flooding also require technical solutions.

A sensitive point is the replacement of the Kurupukari ferry with a double-lane bridge, essential to ensure traffic during the rainy season.

The Linden–Mabura Hill phase faces operational challenges but remains contracted and underway, according to official statements.

What Experts Say

In an interview, Professor Jean Marcelo Lacerda (UFT) evaluated that the road connection tends to “further increase trade between Brazil and Guyana”.

He emphasized the need for social and educational countermeasures so that economic expansion does not concentrate in a few sectors.

The expert highlighted that the work responds to the new level of the country in the oil and gas industry.

According to him, the qualification of local labor will be crucial to capture opportunities.

Oil Reserves

Public estimates of recoverable resources in offshore Guyana vary by source and methodology.

ExxonMobil reports about 11 billion equivalent barrels already discovered in the Stabroek block. S&P Global estimates 18.7 billion equivalent barrels for the basin as a whole.

The sector’s advancement explains the urgency to unlock logistical bottlenecks such as the road and the new port.

With paving underway and the Palmyra port progressing, how should companies from Roraima and the rest of the Amazon reorganize their routes to take advantage of the 48-hour window to the Atlantic?
