American Measure Pressures Ranchers in the Midwest and Opens Space for Argentina to Supply the US Market While Buying Cheaper Protein from Brazil
The decision by the United States to raise tariffs on Brazilian beef by 50% could significantly alter the sector’s export routes. According to specialists, part of the shipments that will no longer be directed to the North American market may be redirected to Uruguay and Argentina, preventing an increase in domestic supply and easing the pressure on prices paid to ranchers.
Central Brazil Gains Strategic Role
According to Professor Júlio Barcellos, coordinator of the Center for Studies in Beef Production Systems and Productive Chain (NESPro) at UFRGS, the strategy may mainly favor the flow of cheaper cuts produced in the Brazilian Midwest. Sales to neighboring countries would give breathing room to producers and prevent the concentration of this beef in the domestic market.

“Brazil is already a supplier to Uruguay. It is possible that Argentina will follow a similar path by buying more economical cuts from Central Brazil, which do not compete with the pricier beef from Rio Grande do Sul, which has a different quality. This, at least in the short term, helps to ‘unload’ part of the beef that will no longer go to the United States,” Barcellos explained in an interview with Correio do Povo, highlighting that the change is likely to consolidate at least in the short term.
Argentina Aims for Space in the United States
The logistical reconfiguration also opens an opportunity for Argentina. The country may expand its shipments to the United States, filling the space left by Brazil. However, this strategy tends to pressure the domestic protein supply, which may result in higher prices for Argentine consumers.
Barcellos recalls that President Javier Milei removed tariffs that limited beef exports. Therefore, Argentine processors can take advantage of higher international market prices, export, and at the same time, import Brazilian beef at lower prices, especially from the Midwest.
Impacts for Rio Grande do Sul
In the case of Rio Grande do Sul, the NESPro coordinator emphasizes that the United States is not one of the primary destinations for the beef produced in the state. Nonetheless, the tariff issue resonated locally because the sector is highly interconnected, and there is a constant flow of beef from other states to the gaucho market.
According to him, the priority for Rio Grande do Sul is to enhance traceability of the herd, strengthen border controls, and invest in productivity to reduce costs and maintain the competitiveness of premium beef. “The important thing is to ensure that the average cost continues to decrease, and gaucho beef remains distinguished by quality,” he stated.
New Configuration of Regional Trade
The US measure, therefore, not only directly impacts Brazilian ranchers but may also reorganize the meat trade in South America. While Argentina strengthens its presence in the North American market, Brazil tends to consolidate its position as a supplier to neighboring countries, especially for lower value-added cuts.
The information was reported by Correio do Povo, which also highlighted the Argentine government’s concern over domestic inflation and its effects on popular supply amid the opening of exports.
