The Oil Company Petrobras, Anticipating Vulnerability in Its Production, Including Platform Safety, Achieves a Threshold in Court to Hire Operational Labor
Petrobras has been forced to initiate emergency hiring with job openings in the technical and operational areas. With no end in sight for the oil workers’ strike and fearing that its oil production would be affected, including worker safety, the court authorized the hiring of “non-civil servants,” which might even trigger a precedent so that the state-owned company will no longer need to hold public contests in the future.

Petrobras reported in a statement that it “is making arrangements,” as authorized by the court, for the immediate hiring of people and services, on an emergency basis, to ensure operational continuity in its units during the oil workers’ strike, which began on February 1.

In the statement, the state-owned company emphasized that the court order from the Superior Labor Court (TST) to guarantee a minimum contingent of 90% of the workforce has not been complied with by the unions, and as a result, the court authorized Petrobras to make emergency hires to temporarily cover essential services and avoid operational impacts. Unions
The Director of Institutional Affairs of the Unique Federation of Oil Workers (FUP), Deyvid Barcelar, guaranteed that the strike due to the job openings continues even after Petrobras announced that it has started the emergency hiring process. According to Barcelar, if the unions are not complying with the TST’s order to maintain a minimum workforce of 90% in their units, it is because of Petrobras itself.
The FUP director highlighted that in recent days the unions have sent several letters to Petrobras asking about the needs to meet the minimum workforce, but the company has not responded.
