Petrobras Increased The Price Of Natural Gas By 19%. The Updated Prices Will Be Effective This Sunday, May 1
On the last Friday, the 29th, Petrobras announced that the sale prices of natural gas for distributors would increase by 19% starting this Sunday, May 1. According to the state-owned company, the increase is due to contracts that provide for adjustments every three months based on fluctuations in Brent crude oil and exchange rates during the same period.
The company also emphasized that the price of natural gas for consumers is also influenced by the profit margins of distributors, in addition to federal and state taxes. “On average, for residential customers, the Petrobras share in the price to the consumer corresponds to about 28% of the final tariff, according to information from the Monthly Gas Industry Monitoring Bulletin published by MME,” noted a statement from Petrobras.

Petrobras emphasizes that the new prices for natural gas charged to distributors will remain the same until 31/7/2022. The decision to update the price only every three months is an attempt to mitigate the impact of occasional fluctuations in Brent crude oil. This way, consumers are guaranteed predictability and transparency regarding the values.

The prices of gas in Brazil are applied according to the Import Parity Price Policy (PPI), which is a way to apply international market prices in the national market. The price of Brent crude oil is taken into account. In recent months, the price charged for Brent crude oil has seen a significant increase, mainly due to the war in Ukraine. The barrel jumped from US$ 82 at the beginning of January to US$ 130 in March. The price stabilized, being quoted at US$ 105.
Who Are The Affected By The Increase In Natural Gas?
It is worth noting that the price changes will not affect liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) customers. The state-owned measure is expected to strongly impact users of piped natural gas and customers who use Compressed Natural Gas (CNG). Some industrial sectors will also suffer from the impact of the adjustment, such as the chemical, metallurgical, pharmaceutical, and textile industries.
The impact of the adjustment on the final consumer is uncertain. As Petrobras stated, the final price still depends on the profit margin of distributors and federal and state taxes.
“The update of Petrobras’ natural gas prices followed the adjustment parameters used by other companies operating in this segment, similar to Petrobras, which varied from 18% to 28% in contracts linked to Brent oil,” emphasizes Petrobras.
