Petrobras and Amazônica Energy Advance Energy Transition with Groundbreaking Small-Scale LNG Commercialization, Expanding Access to Natural Gas and Strengthening Sustainable Development in the Northern Region
On November 10, 2025, Petrobras and Amazônica Energy announced the signing of a pioneering contract for the commercialization of LNG (liquefied natural gas) on a small scale, extracted from the Urucu Polo, located in Coari (AM).
This agreement represents a strategic advancement in the monetization of reserves in the Solimões Sedimentary Basin, with the aim of bringing natural gas to isolated locations in the Northern Region, transforming the logistical and energy demand of the region.
Petrobras and Amazônica Energy Lead Logistical Innovation
The contract has an initial duration of ten years, with operations expected to begin in February 2028. The contracted volume is 100,000 cubic meters per day, enough to supply approximately 6,600 gas-powered vehicles daily.

The partnership between Petrobras and Amazônica Energy marks a new phase in the energy infrastructure of the Amazon. The small-scale LNG commercialization model allows the fuel to be transported via river and land routes, overcoming the challenges imposed by the region’s geography.
Álvaro Tupiassu, Executive Manager of Gas and Energy at Petrobras, highlighted that logistical solutions are being developed to increase the supply of natural gas and reduce carbon emissions in the Amazon region.
Additionally, the project aims to serve cities that are currently not covered by the Coari-Manaus gas pipeline, such as Tefé, Tabatinga, and other locations with limited access to conventional energy infrastructure.
Urucu Polo and the Potential of LNG as a Development Vector
The Urucu Polo, located 363 km from Manaus, is one of Brazil’s main oil provinces. Operated by Petrobras since the 1980s, the polo has established infrastructure for the extraction and processing of natural gas. The initiative to sell LNG directly from Urucu represents a optimization of existing assets, focusing on sustainability and efficiency.
The transformation of gas into LNG allows for greater transportation flexibility, especially in regions with low population density and difficult access. The liquefaction process reduces the gas volume by up to 600 times, facilitating storage and distribution.
The replacement of fossil fuels with natural gas in Amazonian communities has the potential to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
In addition to environmental benefits, the project also promotes energy inclusion, providing a clean and efficient source to populations that rely on fuel oil generators. This contributes to improved quality of life, public health, and local economic development.
Innovative Logistics: Small-Scale LNG as a Viable Alternative
The Amazon presents unique challenges for energy distribution. The lack of paved roads, dependence on navigable rivers, and the distance between urban centers make traditional logistics unfeasible in many cases.
The use of small-scale LNG is a smart response to these obstacles. The flexibility of transportation by barges, cryogenic trucks, and adapted vessels allows gas to reach previously inaccessible locations.
Amazônica Energy, specialized in energy solutions for remote areas, will be responsible for the distribution and marketing of LNG, acting as a strategic partner of Petrobras in project execution.
Petrobras and Amazon Energy: Job Creation and Industry Stimulation
The initiative also has a strong economic impact. The expansion of natural gas infrastructure in the Northern Region can stimulate new industrial investments, especially in sectors such as ceramics, food, hospitality, and transportation.
Studies indicate that access to energy is one of the main factors for the growth of small and medium enterprises in peripheral regions. With a continuous supply of natural gas, hundreds of direct and indirect jobs are expected to be created along with local workforce training.
The presence of a more robust energy chain can attract new businesses, strengthen regional commerce, and increase municipal revenue.
Energy Security and National Sovereignty with Support from Petrobras
Diversifying Brazil’s energy matrix is one of the pillars of national security. By investing in projects like Urucu Polo, Petrobras reinforces its strategic role in the energy self-sufficiency of the country, reducing dependence on imported fuels and strengthening the state’s presence in the Amazon.
The partnership with Amazônica Energy represents a replicable model that can be expanded to other regions with similar logistical characteristics, such as the Pantanal and the interior of Pará.
Furthermore, the project contributes to the achievement of climate goals set by Brazil in international agreements, such as the Paris Agreement.
LNG and Natural Gas as Pillars of Brazil’s Energy Transition
The contract signed between Petrobras and Amazônica Energy in November is more than a commercial agreement: it is a milestone in the energy transformation of the Northern Region. By betting on small-scale LNG, the companies are promoting sustainability, inclusion, and logistical innovation.
The initiative strengthens the local economy, protects the environment, and expands access to clean energy, aligning with Brazil’s climate commitments and global decarbonization goals.
Set to begin in 2028, the project promises to redefine the role of natural gas in the Amazon, making it a vector of development and quality of life for thousands of Brazilians.
