UN Declaration Marks The Official Recognition That The World Will No Longer Be Able To Meet The Climate Limit Set By The Paris Agreement

The United Nations (UN) confirmed on October 22, 2025 that the planet will no longer be able to keep global warming below 1.5 °C.

During a meeting of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) in Geneva, Secretary-General António Guterres stated that “surpassing the limit now is inevitable”. He described the moment as the most alarming in modern climate history.

According to Guterres, the planet has entered a cycle of unprecedented overheating, driven by the burning of fossil fuels and the rise in carbon dioxide emissions. He warned that “humanity is destroying its own future” and called for immediate action.

The goal of 1.5 °C, established in the 2015 Paris Agreement, represented the global limit to avoid irreversible environmental disasters. However, emissions continue to rise, and therefore, the UN acknowledges that this objective is out of reach.

WMO Reports Confirm That The Climate Limit Has Already Been Exceeded

In March 2025, the WMO released the report “State of the Global Climate 2024”. The study confirmed that the global average temperature reached +1.55 °C above levels from 1850 to 1900.

The report also indicated that 2024 was the hottest year in history, surpassing 2023, which had recorded +1.45 °C.

In May 2025, the WMO released the report “Global Annual to Decadal Climate Update (2025–2029)”. It indicated an 86% chance that at least one of the next five years will exceed the 1.5 °C limit. Moreover, there is an 80% chance that one of those years will become the hottest ever recorded.

The UK Met Office, along with ten international centers, confirmed these predictions. According to WMO Deputy Secretary-General Ko Barrett, “we have just experienced the hottest decade on record, and there are no signs that this will change anytime soon”.

This information was reinforced by BBC News, Reuters, and G1, which highlighted that the planet has entered a new era of extreme heat and increasing risks.

The Impacts Of Overheating Are Already Affecting Economies And Societies

With rising temperatures, extreme heat waves, prolonged droughts, and intense storms have become more frequent. These phenomena directly affect agriculture, food security, and water supply, as well as put pressure on health systems.

According to UN data, climate disasters are already causing annual losses exceeding trillions of dollars. Furthermore, adaptation costs remain lower than the damages from political and environmental inaction.

According to analyses by Reuters and WMO, climate change is already compromising energy and social stability in various regions of the planet. Meanwhile, rising sea levels threaten coastal cities and strategic ports.

Scientists warn that even immediate cuts in emissions will take decades to stabilize temperatures, which underscores the need for urgent and coordinated actions.

UN Calls For International Cooperation Before The Scenario Becomes Irreversible

Despite the critical situation, António Guterres reaffirms that there is still time to avoid total collapse. He advocates for the phased-out elimination of fossil fuels and investment in renewable energy as essential measures.

According to him, “every fraction of a degree counts”, and keeping warming below 2 °C will be crucial to preserve human life and ecosystems.

The UN reiterates its call for global cooperation and technology transfer between countries, as well as demanding financial support from wealthy nations to the most vulnerable.

With the COP30 scheduled for November 2025 in Belém, the world is preparing for the most decisive climate meeting of the decade. The event is expected to set new mitigation and adaptation targets.

Meanwhile, temperatures continue to rise, and records multiply, showing that humanity is facing the most dangerous decade in its history.

Is There Still Time To Slow Down Warming Before The Point Of No Return Becomes Inevitable?
