The Iconic Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York Will Undergo a Major Transformation, Including the Reopening of the Rockefeller Wing and the Construction of a New Wing for Contemporary Art, Totaling £467 Million.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, one of the most famous museums in the world, will receive a significant financial boost of £467 million for a major renovation and expansion, as reported by Express.co.uk. This investment includes the reopening of the Michael C. Rockefeller Wing, costing US$ 70 million, and the construction of a new wing for Modern and Contemporary Art, estimated at US$ 550 million.
Reopening of the Rockefeller Wing and Construction of the Visionary Tang Wing
The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York is set to reopen its Michael C. Rockefeller Wing on May 31. This space is dedicated to the exhibition of art from Africa, Oceania, and the Ancient Americas. The wing has undergone a complete renovation and refurbishment. Additionally, the institution is constructing a new wing. This will be dedicated to modern and contemporary pieces. Its opening is scheduled for 2030. Together, the two projects represent a total investment of £467 million (US$ 70 million for the Rockefeller Wing and US$ 550 million for the new wing).
Pioneering Design of the New Wing at the Met in New York
The new section for Contemporary Art has been designed by Frida Escobedo. She is the first woman to design a wing in the 154-year history of the New York museum. This new wing is expected to add almost 50% more exhibition space. In December, the conceptual design of the new Contemporary Art wing was revealed. Museum heads say this will create “a new dynamic home for the Met’s renowned collection of 20th and 21st-century art.”

More Space, Accessibility, and Sustainability
The new wing project will create over 6,500 square meters. This space will be used for the exhibition of modern and contemporary art. The expansion also aims to meet accessibility needs. Infrastructure and sustainability across all floors will be enhanced. The wing will connect seamlessly with the rest of the museum in New York. The Met added, “Drawing inspiration from varied architectural styles, diverse art collections, and the location near Central Park, the Tang Wing will contribute to the rich history of the museum by promoting intelligent, bold, and visionary architecture that is, in itself, a work of art.”
Visitor Recovery and Recognition by the New York City Mayor
This significant expansion comes after a period of recovery. Authorities reported last year that museum attendance has bounced back after the COVID-19 pandemic. The two Met locations in New York welcomed over 5.5 million visitors. New York City Mayor Eric Adams commented late last year: “The Metropolitan Museum of Art is one of the crown jewels of the city of New York, an iconic cultural landmark that represents New Yorkers to the rest of the world.” He also stated: “By showcasing works of art created by both emerging and established artists from all walks of life, the Tang Wing is a bold effort to expand our understanding of the role of art in New York culture and in our society.”
