The U.S. Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, Warned on Monday That the United States and Brazil Need to Reduce Their Dependence on Imports from China for Their Own Security.

In a virtual summit on increasing Brazil-U.S. cooperation aimed at post-pandemic recovery, Pompeo highlighted the importance of expanding bilateral economic ties, given what he called an “enormous risk” stemming from the significant participation of Communist China in their import economies.

“As we can find ways to increase the import trade between our two countries, we can (…) reduce each of our two nations’ dependence on critical items” coming from China, he said.

Bolsonaro has yet to ban Brazilian telecommunications companies from buying 5G equipment from Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. in China, as more countries are doing after alarms were raised about network security, given the CCP’s control over all registered companies in China.

At the summit organized by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Bolsonaro confirmed the signing of a protocol outlining three agreements with the United States that will ensure good business practices between the two allies and prevent corruption. He said the package would reduce bureaucracy and increase trade and investment.
