Temporary Measure Promises to Restructure the Port of Itajaí and Boost the Recovery of the Shipbuilding Industry in Brazil, with a Focus on Job Creation and Strengthening Foreign Trade.
The Port of Itajaí, in Santa Catarina, is set to undergo one of the biggest restructurings in its history: the federal government is preparing a provisional measure that will transform it into an independent dock, untying it from the Port Authority of Santos.
The announcement was made on Thursday (29) by the Minister of Ports and Airports, Silvio Costa Filho, during the symbolic ceremony to resume operations at the terminal.
The initiative marks a new chapter for national port logistics and represents a strategic step to modernize the sector and strengthen the Brazilian shipbuilding industry.

Autonomy and Federal Status for the Port of Itajaí
Since January, the Port of Itajaí has been under federal administration and subordinated to the management of the Port of Santos.
With the new provisional measure, the terminal will be elevated to the status of an autonomous federal port, with its own port authority.
This change meets long-standing demands from the region and promises to bring more agility to logistical, administrative, and commercial processes.
“We will be forwarding a provisional measure that will transform the Port of Itajaí into an independent dock and a federal port,” declared the minister.
The new structure will allow the port to make strategic decisions more aligned with local and regional needs, in addition to expanding its capacity to attract investments.
Billion-Dollar Investments and Regional Impact
During the event, the government also confirmed the allocation of R$ 800 million in investments for modernization and expansion of the port’s operational capacity.
The goal is to recover the prominence of the Santa Catarina terminal, which had its activities interrupted in 2022, after the unsuccessful attempt at privatization.
In 100 days under federal management, the Port of Itajaí has already recorded revenues of R$ 50 million, a growth of 125% compared to the same month last year — a clear sign of its economic relevance and recovery potential.
Shipbuilding Industry in Recovery: 52 New Vessels by 2026
Another highlight of the ceremony was the announcement made by the president of Petrobras, Magda Chambriard, about the reactivation of the demand for vessels from the Brazilian shipbuilding industry.
According to her, 52 new units are expected to be contracted by 2026, totaling R$ 29 billion in investments. Santa Catarina, with its tradition in shipbuilding, will play a central role in this process.
Since 2016, the sector had not recorded orders of this magnitude. The initiative not only boosts the local economy but also fosters job creation in shipyards that have been inactive.
Foreign Trade and Logistical Sovereignty
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva took the opportunity to emphasize the importance of Brazil investing in its own fleet of ships. According to him, “a country that conducts 90% of its exports by sea cannot depend on foreign freight.”
The Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad, also highlighted the positive economic scenario, with falling inflation and a historical record in the generation of formal jobs.
He attributed part of this advancement to investments in infrastructure and the reactivation of strategic sectors, such as port and naval.
With the imminent independence of the Port of Itajaí and the hefty investments announced, the expectation is that the terminal will consolidate as an excellent logistical hub in the South of the country.
