During Official Mission in Israel, Mayor Álvaro Damião Seeks Shelter in Bunker After Attack Sirens and Announces Cancellation of His Agenda in the Country
The mayor of Belo Horizonte, Álvaro Damião (União Brasil), experienced tense moments early this Friday (6/13) while on an official mission in Israel. According to the website Estado de Minas, at 3 a.m. local time, he was awakened by emergency sirens and had to take shelter in a bunker due to Israeli attacks on Iran.
Damião reported that he was sleeping in a dormitory when the alarm went off. “I heard the alert and at first I was very scared. It’s a strange, different thing. But they are very well prepared. It doesn’t even feel like something is happening in the city,” he said in an interview with Estado de Minas.
Bunker and Agenda Cancellation
The mayor remained in the bunker throughout the night. The place where he is staying is considered safe and has not been hit by counterattacks from Iran.

Even so, he decided to suspend his participation in the official event. “On the first flight I can take back to Brazil, I will return. I’m going to stay in my room, I won’t walk around the city. The event is canceled for me. The schedules continue, it was every day, but for me it’s over,” he declared.
Official Trip with Focus on Safety
Álvaro Damião is in Israel accompanied by the municipal secretary of Security and Prevention, Márcio Lobato. The goal was to learn about models adopted in the country in the field of security.
Early Return to Brazil
The return of the Minas Gerais delegation to Brazil was scheduled for June 20. However, the mayor stated that he intends to leave as soon as possible. He remains sequestered in the dormitory, accompanied by another 25 Brazilians. “I was very shocked,” he summed up.
