This Is The First Time That A Municipal Public Asset In The Social Area Is “Adopted” By A Company. In Just One Year, The House Has Already Benefited More Than 17 Thousand Young People In Qualification Courses
The Special Secretariat for Youth of Rio de Janeiro (JUVRio) celebrated, on the morning of this Saturday (11/25), the first anniversary of the Youth House in the central region of the city, located on Rua Santo Cristo. The place is a training and service hub for young people in vulnerable situations in the region and has already benefited 17,743 people aged 15 to 29 in just one year of existence. The novelty is that, starting now, the House has the support of Ocyan, a company in the oil and gas sector, through an unprecedented public-private partnership (PPP) and will now be called Casa da Juventude Ocyan. This is the first time in the city of Rio that the “adoption” system of a public asset is directed toward a social equipment.
Salvino Oliveira, Secretary of Youth of Rio de Janeiro, recalled the importance of spaces like the Youth Houses in the integration of young people into the job market.
“The Youth House in the city center has the capacity to serve up to 1,500 young people per month, with online and in-person courses. It is a reference center for these young people in such a vulnerable region. Providência, which is right next door, is the first favela in Brazil and represents a challenge for the government that is beginning to be overcome by public facilities and partnerships like this one, in which there is a union to transform the lives of thousands of young people every year,” said the secretary.

The CEO of Ocyan, Roberto Ramos, confirmed the commitment made with JUVRio for the reception and qualification of young people at the Youth House. The company will be responsible for the internal revitalization of the unit’s physical facilities and will promote actions to foster education and work, encouraging workshops especially through the volunteering of its members.
“For me, this is a rescue of the capacity to dream, promoting growth as a person and citizen. We have many innovative ideas for vocational programs that can produce future professionals in professions that interest us, such as mechanical turning, for example. You can be sure that we are committed to this,” said Ramos.
The celebration featured a series of free services for the population, such as issuing second copies of documents, health services, barbers, and hairdressers, as well as musical, dance, and DJ performances. The celebration was attended by the municipal secretariats of Health, Environment, and Social Assistance, the Municipal Guard, CET-Rio, Fundação Leão XIII, and Detran.
The Youth Houses
Open from Monday to Friday, from 9am to 6pm, the Youth Houses focus on serving local young achievers and youth in vulnerability. The Houses welcome young people from different social profiles such as residents of favelas and peripheral regions, members of families with a monthly income of up to three minimum wages, families beneficiaries of social programs, young mothers, those in grade-age distortion or out of school, and those subject to socio-educational measures. The Houses also receive former inmates, people in shelter situations, or those who are homeless.
Currently, JUVRio has two more units besides the Central House: one in Morro dos Macacos and another in Chapadão, in the North Zone. To enroll in any course at the Youth Houses, just access the secretary’s social media: www.instagram.com/juvrio. It is also possible to fill out the form in person at the units. The participation form for the workshops is open on a recurring basis, and the classes are formed every month following enrollment. Just keep an eye out and choose what to study. All courses last one month, offer certificates, and are free.
