Senator Davi Alcolumbre Reinforces Defense For Oil Exploration In The Equatorial Margin: “It Is A National Agenda”.
Amid a heated debate between Petrobras and Ibama regarding the future of oil exploration in the Equatorial Margin, the President of the Senate, Davi Alcolumbre (União-AP), publicly reiterated his support for conducting studies and enabling the activity in the Amapá region.
For him, overcoming technical and environmental obstacles is possible and necessary to boost local and national economic development. Alcolumbre classified the agenda as strategic, not just for the state he represents, but for all of Brazil.
Deadlock Between Petrobras And Ibama Keeps Licensing Stalled
The oil exploration project on the northern coast of the country is hindered by disagreements among the involved agencies.
-
A 45 km² oil slick appears in satellite images near Kharg Island, an area that accounts for 90% of Iran’s oil exports.
-
While Petrobras operates at 7,000 meters in the pre-salt layer, China is extracting oil and gas at 10,910 meters onshore — Shenditake 1 is the world’s first onshore well to exceed 10 km.
-
Brazil discovers natural hydrogen in four states and enters the silent race that could redraw the energy transition: Petrobras has already invested R$ 20 million in studies.

Trump promises transparency in Venezuela’s oil, but secret deals and corruption allegations continue to surround the billion-dollar sector.
Petrobras, responsible for the initiative, seeks authorization to start exploratory research, while Ibama maintains restrictions and unmet technical requests.
The clash has generated tension among political representatives and environmental authorities, delaying the decision on the area’s licensing.

Alcolumbre argues that unlocking the project can represent an economic turnaround for Amapá, one of the poorest states in Brazil.
According to him, the resources generated from oil activity have the potential to transform the local reality through job creation, infrastructure, and social inclusion.
“This agenda is not just about Amapá, it is about Brazil: exploring our natural riches and transforming these riches into benefits for the Brazilian people and the people of Amapá,” declared the senator.
The Amapá Bench Demonstrates Unity In Defense Of The Equatorial Margin
The proposal has solid support from the Amapá delegation in Congress. Senator Randolfe Rodrigues (PT-AP) stated that conducting research is a right of the people of Amapá and argued that the studies can also contribute to the environmental agenda.
“It is a fundamental initiative for our future, but also essential for the country,” he emphasized.
Senator Lucas Barreto (PSD-AP) also reinforced the importance of political unity around the cause.
“We are united to show Brazil the importance of this research,” he stated, indicating that the consensus among local lawmakers strengthens the fight for licensing.
National Support For Oil Exploration And Research
Outside the Amapá delegation, senators from other states have also expressed support for the proposal.
For Senator Rogério Carvalho (PT-PE), the country needs to better understand its riches, especially those located in the Equatorial Margin.
“We are talking about a reserve that is 500 kilometers from the Brazilian coast. Knowing what we have in terms of riches is fundamental for the country and for the people in the Northern region of Brazil. This is not just a banner for Amapá, but for all Brazil,” he said, highlighting that Petrobras has expertise in deep-water operations and that the country already shows commitment to energy sustainability.
Understand What The Equatorial Margin Is
The Brazilian Equatorial Margin is considered one of the areas with the greatest unexplored oil potential today.
Located between Amapá and Rio Grande do Norte, the region can play a crucial role in balancing economic development and energy transition.
Davi Alcolumbre and allies argue that the country cannot forgo the opportunity to know and leverage this possible wealth, provided that technical and environmental criteria are respected.
