During a debate held on Thursday evening (17), Canada’s Prime Minister, Mark Carney, stated that China represents the greatest threat to the country’s national security in geopolitical terms. The statement was made just days before the federal elections, scheduled for April 28.
When directly asked what the main threat to Canadian security would be, Carney responded plainly: “China.” The next day, at a press conference in Niagara Falls, he elaborated on his position, mentioning concerns about China’s foreign interference in Canada’s internal affairs.
Carney also warned about the growing Chinese interest in the Arctic region, which, according to him, represents an emerging threat. “We are taking steps to address it,” he said, without going into detail about what actions are being taken.

Concerns About Foreign Interference Take Center Stage
The issue of foreign interference has been gaining increasing significance in the Canadian political debate. In addition to concerns about foreign interference, the Prime Minister also addressed the relationship between China and Russia. He stated that the partnership between the two countries strengthens Russia’s position in the war against Ukraine, a conflict that has lasted more than two years and has mobilized Western countries in support of Ukrainian resistance.
According to Carney, China’s actions are not limited to indirect support for Russia. He also pointed out the Chinese presence as a broader threat in Asia, especially concerning Taiwan, an island whose political status is a point of dispute between Beijing and several countries.
Trade Dispute with the US and International Alternatives
Another point raised by Carney was the ongoing trade war between Canada and the United States. Despite the long partnership between the two countries, tensions have arisen in recent months due to the imposition of US tariffs on Canadian products, such as steel, aluminum, and automobiles. In response, Canada has adopted retaliatory tariffs.
Carney explained that Canada does not intend to respond equivalently in financial terms, but recognized that the global trade landscape is undergoing significant changes. “This level of shared values with the US is changing, therefore, our level of engagement will change,” he stated.
In light of this scenario, the Prime Minister said that Canada is seeking to expand its trade relationships with other blocs and regions. He mentioned strengthening ties with the European Union, the ASEAN bloc, Mercosur, and other emerging economies as alternatives.
The Final Stretch of the Election Campaign
Carney’s statements come at a decisive moment in the electoral campaign in Canada. His party, the Liberal Party, is leading in the polls, but faces a tight race with the Conservative opposition, which is also exploring themes related to national security and foreign policy.
