It’s Not Every Day That We Receive News That A Nuclear-Powered Submarine Has Been Created, Is It? The First Of Its Kind Built By ICN And NUCLEP Was Named In Honor Of The Vice Admiral Of The Brazilian Navy
The first nuclear-powered submarine built by ICN and NUCLEP was named “Álvaro Alberto,” in honor of the vice admiral of the Brazilian Navy and Brazilian scientist – Álvaro Alberto da Mota e Silva. The ceremony took place at the Nuclear Generation Laboratory (Labgene), where the prototype is being constructed.

The Beginning Of The Creation Of The Nuclear Submarine By ICN And NUCLEP
The start of the reactor assembly will correspond to the so-called “keel laying,” a naval tradition that represents the beginning of a ship’s construction.
In the upcoming stages of the program, the reactor, the turbo generators, the electric motor, and other systems similar to those of a nuclear-powered submarine will be tested in a controlled manner at Labgene, with the main objective of safely validating the operation of the reactor and the various electromechanical systems integrated with it, before its installation on board the submarine. All these procedures are carried out by ICN.

With a capacity for 9,100 vehicles, solar panels on deck, and liquefied natural gas engines, the Höegh Aurora is the world’s largest car carrier, and the ship that can embark an entire city’s worth of cars in a single voyage will transition to zero-carbon ammonia by 2027, becoming the first large cargo ship in history to completely abandon fossil fuels.

The nuclear submarine that never arrives: The Álvaro Alberto project has accumulated 47 years of development, R$ 40 billion spent since 2008, and may now be delayed until 2037 due to a lack of R$ 1 billion in the Brazilian Navy’s coffers.

Portonave is investing R$ 2 billion to modernize the Port of Navegantes and accommodate ships up to 400 meters, but the project depends on the federal government deepening the channel from 14 to 17 meters, a concession that is at the TCU.

At the end of the ICN tests, a reactor similar to the one starting to be assembled at Labgene will be installed on the submarine “Álvaro Alberto,” at the Naval Complex of Itaguaí, in the southern part of the state of Rio de Janeiro, where the four diesel-electric submarines also planned in PROSUB are already being constructed or tested: the “Riachuelo” (S-40), the “Humaitá” (S-41), the “Tonelero” (S-42), and the “Angostura” (S-43).
Innovation In The Creations Of ICN And NUCLEP
With French technology, the most modern in this market, 100 meters in length and a displacement of 6,000 tons, the SN-BR will be Brazil’s first nuclear-powered submarine, as well as the first to be built in the Southern Hemisphere by ICN – Itaguaí Naval Constructions.
Brazil is one of the few countries in the world that has a project for the construction of a nuclear submarine aimed exclusively at hunting other submarines, which will not carry ballistic missiles.
The project is part of the Brazilian Navy’s Submarine Development Program (PROSUB) and will be entirely Brazilian, elevating Brazil to the select group of countries that build this type of military vessel, which currently includes only 6 countries: France, United States, Russia, China, India, and England.
