The President Of Petrobras Stated In A Recent Lecture That He Plans To Focus On Offshore Wind Energy Production In The State. For Jean Paul Prates, This Is The Great Bet For The Growth Of Rio Grande Do Norte In The Coming Years.
In a recent lecture last Friday, (02/24), at the Federation of Industries of Rio Grande do Norte (Fiern), the new president of Petrobras commented on the next steps of the company in the state of Rio Grande do Norte. Jean Paul Prates emphasized that the offshore frontier is the focus of the state-owned company in the region, especially the production of offshore wind energy. Green hydrogen projects are also on the company’s radar to be developed in the coming years.
Petrobras Sees Great Potential For Investments In Offshore Wind Energy Production And Green Hydrogen In Rio Grande Do Norte, Emphasizes Prates
The new president of Petrobras, Jean Paul Prates, announced in a recent visit to Rio Grande do Norte that the offshore frontier is the company’s destination, and it is already working on this for the coming years.
He delivered a lecture at an event held to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Federation of Industries of Rio Grande do Norte (Fiern), at the organization’s headquarters located in the state of Rio Grande do Norte.

At 4,400 meters of altitude in the Himalayas, where the air is so thin it makes breathing difficult, India’s state oil company drilled a thousand meters of rock to reach a 240-degree subsoil and set up the country’s first geothermal plant.

An “invisible” plant can transform rivers meeting the sea into electricity 24 hours a day: French startup uses nanotechnology to extract energy from the salt difference between fresh and saltwater, without sun, wind, dam, or fuel.
The lecture, titled “A Vision For The Future: Perspectives For Oil Production And Renewable Energies,” addressed the future of the state of Rio Grande do Norte concerning offshore wind energy production and green hydrogen projects, in addition to other fuels.
These are the main projects of Jean Paul Prates for the region, due to the high potential for generating energy in the area.
The state is a leader in wind energy production throughout Brazil, being a major bet for the implementation of the largest offshore wind projects in the coming years.
With the ongoing energy transition, Petrobras has been seeking investments in alternative sources to oil, such as green hydrogen, which will also be the focus in the state of Rio Grande do Norte.
“Onshore wind is already extremely dense. Petrobras has already participated in this and eventually decided to exit, selling its four parks in Guamaré. Offshore is the frontier for Petrobras, where no one has started to operate yet and where the company feels comfortable. RN is a pioneer in wind measurement in Brazil. It is where it has provided security for investing in wind,” stated Jean Paul Prates.
During His Last Visit To The State, Jean Paul Prates Reinforced The Company’s Commitment To Rio Grande Do Norte In 2023
With the progress of Petrobras’s divestment project during the Bolsonaro Government, the expectation was that the company would exit various strategic regions of Northeast Brazil, including RN.
However, during his last visit to the state, Jean Paul Prates announced the suspension of the scheduled transfers and preparations for the sale of assets in the Potiguar Basin.
He also mentioned that the state would host one of the company’s renewable energy directorates in the coming months.
“Those in RJ today, 99% of people only talk about oil, pre-salt. How is this individual going to think about offshore wind energy? There is no ecosystem for it. What I am trying to bring to the company, and this is subject to approvals, is that in each place there should be an ecosystem for something that Petrobras does or should do,” he emphasized.
Thus, Petrobras’s investments, under the leadership of Jean Paul Prates, in offshore wind energy projects are becoming increasingly close to reality in RN.
