Engie Brasil Plans Billions in New Investments in Wind Energy in Bahia. The Expectation Is That 3,000 Jobs and Income Will Be Generated for the Population.
Engie Brasil Energia is maintaining investments for the expansion in renewable energy, and Bahia remains its priority. The Serra do Assuruá Wind Complex will have an installed capacity of 846 MW, nearly enough to supply the city of Salvador, being Engie Brasil’s largest wind farm in the national territory, located in Gentio do Ouro (BA).
Engie Brasil Plans to Invest R$ 6 Billion in Bahia
Just in the last year, the company has already made investments of R$ 516 million in the project, of which R$ 180 million were invested in the last quarter of the year alone. In total, the forecast is R$ 6 billion, with the generation of approximately 3,000 direct and indirect jobs in the region.
The issuance of the installation environmental license is expected to begin this year, allowing construction to start, with a gradual commercial operation launch anticipated from the second half of next year.

The world has bet on green hydrogen as the fuel of the future, but now faces the side effect: producing 1 kilogram requires about 9 liters of ultrapure water, and the largest projects on the planet are precisely in the driest regions of the Earth, where water is already scarce for people.
In Bahia, Engie Brasil already operates the w wind energy complexes Umburanas, Campo Largo I and II, in Umburanas and Sento Sé. Together, the three ventures have more than 1 GW of installed capacity. A large part of the energy produced in the parks is directed to the Free Contracting Environment, which can even serve customers in the energy self-production market.
According to the CEO of investor relations at Engie Brasil Energia, following its strategy of expansion in renewable sources, the company has accelerated wind energy generation in Brazil, also contributing to the socioeconomic advancement of the region.
Engie Seeks to Connect Companies That Share the Same Purposes
In the past year, public school students in Umburanas and Sento Sé benefited from the “Partnerships for Good” Program, an initiative of the company that will connect businesses that share the same goals to multiply the results of their actions for the communities in which they operate.
Executed in partnership with Essilor Luxottica, the world leader in prescription glasses, the ophthalmological health project included screenings and exams conducted in August and September, as well as the provision of 674 corrective lenses with frames. Since the company began operations in Bahia, it has already invested over R$ 18 million in projects in the sectors of health, sanitation, education, and security.
Also, in the past year, Engie Brasil recorded an adjusted net income of R$ 2.8 billion, a value 16.7% higher than that achieved in the previous year. The adjusted Ebitda was 3.8% lower than in the previous year, reaching R$ 6.9 billion in 2022. Excluding the recognition of the hydrological risk repactuation that occurred in 2021, the increase in net income was 109.6%, and the increase in Ebitda reached 23.4%.
Bahia Is a Leader in Wind Energy
In 2022, Bahia regained its Brazilian leadership in wind energy generation with 32.16% of production. The state is also a leader in solar energy generation, with 30.89%. The data are from the Electric Energy Commercialization Chamber (CCEE) and are included in the Executive Reports on Wind and Solar Energy generated by the Secretary of Economic Development (SDE).
According to the secretary, José Nunes, the good winds of Bahia are contributing to the diversification of the Brazilian energy matrix, and the estimate is that more than 176 parks will go into operation, causing the state to exceed 10 GW in installed capacity.
