Changqing Field Surpasses 10,000 Tons Daily Shale Oil Production, Marking Technological and Strategic Advancement in China’s Energy Sector.
China’s largest oil field, Changqing, reached a historic milestone this Wednesday (24): daily production of shale oil surpassed 10,000 tons. Located in the Ordos Basin, the field achieved exactly 10,006 tons, consolidating its position as a key player in the country’s energy expansion.
Technological Advancement Drives Oil Production in Changqing
This achievement is a direct result of investments in technology and research applied since 2018. The goal is clear: to strengthen China’s energy self-sufficiency and increase oil production in a more efficient and sustainable manner. Production in Changqing already represents more than half of all shale oil extracted in China.
The oil production in Changqing only became viable thanks to the implementation of advanced techniques. Among them, the large-scale underground hydraulic fracturing stands out—a technology that allows oil extraction even in complex geological formations with low pressure.

Braskem’s new generation tankers will cross over 5,500 nautical miles between the U.S. and Brazil, reduce CO₂ emissions by 30%, and transport naphtha with modern engines, an optimized hull, and a focus on at-sea efficiency on a strategic route.
These advancements have been essential in overcoming the challenges of exploration in thin and heterogeneous layers, which are typical characteristics of the region. As a result, productivity per well jumped from 1.5 to 18 tons.
Reduction of Workforce Without Losing Efficiency
Another point that demonstrates the efficiency of operations in Changqing is the drastic reduction of the workforce. Previously, more than two thousand workers were needed to achieve one million tons; today, only 200 are sufficient for the same volume.
This productivity leap was made possible by the automation of processes and intensive use of applied science and technology in the oil sector. Additionally, digitalization also helped to reduce costs and increase operational safety.
Changqing Leads Shale Oil Production in China
Currently, the Changqing Oil Field is responsible for 52.2% of the national shale oil production. The projection for 2025 is even more ambitious: to reach 3.5 million tons in that year.
According to Chinese experts, the field will become a global reference model in oil exploration in low-pressure environments. This leadership reaffirms Changqing’s strategic role in China’s energy plan.
The growth of oil production in Changqing is directly linked to China’s strategy to strengthen its internal supply and reduce dependency on imports. The investment in cutting-edge technology and sustainable development allows the country to maintain its competitiveness in the global energy market.
With robust figures and concrete results, Changqing stands as a symbol of the new era of oil production in China. It shows that innovation and efficiency go hand in hand in the country’s energy transformation.
