Petrobras Suspended Its Offshore Wind Power Pilot Project in the Potiguar Basin, Coastal State of Rio Grande do Norte

The Brazilian state-owned company decided to suspend the pilot project for offshore wind power generation in the Ubarana Field, located in the Potiguar Basin, coastal Rio Grande do Norte. The decision by Petrobras was marked by the following announcement in a letter sent to Ibama: “reassessed and suspended while the company explores opportunities for synergies and partnerships aiming to develop a commercial offshore wind project in Brazil.”

The pilot project would involve the installation of a tower and a wind turbine, along with other equipment to measure the potential for offshore wind energy generation. The project would be located 20 km from the coast of Grumaré, with water depth (LDA) of 12 to 16 meters.

The company has opted to exit the renewable energy sectors, both in the suspension of the aforementioned project and also in the area of biofuels. According to the company, these measures are part of maximizing returns for shareholders.

However, Petrobras’s strategy has started to be questioned by market analysts. Last month, during the company’s results presentation (record profit of R$ 40 billion), the company was asked if the slowdown in the energy transition could impact its reputation and competitiveness in the future.

The company’s financial director, Andrea Almeida, pointed out: “I believe that after another two years of hard work, the company will be more competitive and will be prepared to determine which areas will be competitive in renewables for Petrobras.”
