Revolution in Brazilian Mining: Billion-Dollar Investment in Automotive Industry Expected to Increase Production and Demand for Steel in Brazil
Good news for Brazilian mining! In April, the National Association of Vehicle Manufacturers (Anfavea) revealed an investment of R$ 125 billion by 2032 to be made by automakers in Brazil. This investment aims to increase vehicle production, create jobs, and decarbonize the sector. Marcos Ledo, CEO of Krominox, the national leader in the production of tubes and stainless steel solutions, believes that this optimistic scenario will drive other markets that supply the automotive sector.
“The stainless steel industry enables the construction of lighter and more durable vehicles, and the demand for this material is expected to grow in the coming years. Stainless steel is predominant in structures such as bodywork and automotive exhaust systems, including parts like mufflers, pipes, and catalytic converter housings. Additionally, it is used in safety and braking applications, such as the wire mesh of airbags and brake discs. Filters, fuel tanks, and oil gauges, which come into contact with abrasive and corrosive substances, are also made from stainless steel,” explains Ledo.
There Are Already Over 150,000 Electric Cars in Circulation in Brazil
The electric car market also has positive projections. According to a study by the consulting firm AlixPartners, the share of electric vehicles in the global automotive market could reach 54% by 2035.

Another Chinese giant prepares to enter Brazil: BAIC bets on the Arcfox T1, an electric hatchback that promises to compete with the BYD Dolphin, BYD Dolphin Mini, and Geely EX2 with a larger size and a range of up to 425 km.

Hyundai launches a 7-seater ‘Kombi’ cheaper than Chevrolet Spin, Citroën Aircross, and Tiggo 8 Pro in Brazil; for around R$ 78,500 in conversion without taxes, the Hyundai Stargazer Cartenz features a 1.5 engine, manual or IVT transmission, 205 mm ground clearance, and the SmartSense package that Brazilians don’t have yet, but Indonesia does.
In Brazil, despite a more modest commercialization, the Brazilian Electric Vehicle Association (ABVE) reports that there are already over 150,000 units in circulation. This scenario is promising for manufacturers of stainless steel solutions.
Electric Motors and Rechargeable Batteries, Which Contain Large Volumes of Metal Alloy, Are Examples of Items That Require Stainless Steel
“Electric motors and rechargeable batteries, which contain large volumes of metal alloy, are examples of items that require stainless steel. This material will also be used in other elements of electrified models, in addition to bodywork and safety and braking applications, as in combustion vehicles,” says the Krominox executive.
Another relevant application of stainless steel in the electric vehicle market, according to Ledo, is at charging points, or charging stations, which use this metal alloy in their construction.
“Estimates suggest that, in the next three years, there will be around 10,000 charging stations for electric cars in Brazil, with various sources of renewable energy. Considering photovoltaic systems as a clean alternative for energy generation, stainless steel is also present in the structures and collection plates, demonstrating a strong trend of application,” adds Ledo.
