Record Fish And Shrimp Production Generates Billions
In 2024, the sector recorded revenue of R$ 7.7 billion in fish farming and R$ 3.1 billion in shrimp farming, totaling approximately R$ 10 billion generated in Brazil with freshwater and marine production.
This advancement reflected a growth of 10.3% in fish production and 15.2% in shrimp farming compared to the previous year.
Tilapia
In the fish sector, tilapia dominates the ranking: it represents 68.9% of total production, with 499.4 thousand tons.
The South Region accounts for nearly half of this volume, with 47.5% of this production, and Paraná alone contributed 38.2% of the national total — about 190.5 thousand tons.
State Ranking: Highlights By State
The estimated 2023 ranking (based on the Peixe BR Yearbook) indicates that the states with the highest fish production are:
- Paraná (~213,300 tons)
- Santa Catarina
- Minas Gerais
- Rondônia
In the shrimp sector, the Northeast broadly dominates, with 99.7% of national production concentrated in this region.
Ceará Leads Shrimp Production
Within the Northeast, Ceará leads individually with 57.1% of national shrimp production, and the municipality of Aracati alone produced about 12.2% of the national total, equivalent to 18 thousand tons.
Following are Rio Grande do Norte and the municipality of Pendências, which produced 6.5% of the total.
Factors Driving The Ranking
The states that lead this ranking benefit from favorable climate, established production chain structure, and adoption of modern technologies.
In the case of Paraná, its leadership in fish production results from investments in genetics, management, and integration with cooperatives.
In the Northeast, intensive farm-raised shrimp cultivation has strengthened with technological support and adaptation to the marine environment.
Despite the records, the sector faces challenges such as sanitary management, environmental sustainability, and external competition.
It is necessary to follow strategies to ensure that growth does not compromise water resources, ecosystems, and product quality, while seeking to insert Brazil into global fishing and aquaculture markets.
