Innovations at the Refinery Drive Efficiency and Cost Reduction
The Mataripe Refinery, managed by Acelen, shows a significant advancement in its operational efficiency through a strategic plan for revitalization and modernization. Since adopting technologies aimed at Automation and Industry 4.0 in 2021, the refinery has been able to not only increase its productivity but also reduce environmental impacts.
The implementation of the Integrated Maintenance Center (CIM) is one of the major highlights of this process. Since its inauguration at the end of last year, the CIM has already managed to save R$ 1.5 million in operational expenses in just 90 days. It is estimated that this savings will reach R$ 15 million over the next 12 months, reaffirming the success of preventive maintenance strategies.
Preventive Maintenance as Key to Cost Reduction
Celso Ferreira, VP of Operations at the Mataripe Refinery, highlights the CIM’s ability to identify early signs of equipment deterioration, allowing interventions before operational failures occur. “Based on equipment health data and process data, we are able to perform predictive analyses that prevent failures and optimize maintenance,” Ferreira explains. This process not only prevents unplanned downtime but also enhances the efficiency of the maintenance team, which can act more quickly and accurately.

Moreover, the integration of maintenance data with advanced algorithms allows technicians to perform their analyses with greater speed and accuracy, minimizing production losses and costs associated with corrective maintenance.
The Importance of a Specialized Team in the Success of the CIM
Dickson Aragão, Maintenance Director of the Mataripe Refinery, emphasizes that the CIM is the result of collaboration among highly qualified professionals. Engineers and technicians specialized in various areas such as instrumentation, electrical, and automation are essential for the development of the algorithms that guide the CIM. “They analyze failure modes and adapt maintenance practices to meet the specific needs of each piece of equipment, contributing to an innovative model of industrial maintenance,” Aragão states.
Currently, the CIM monitors a wide range of equipment, including 136 rotating equipment and 184 electrical and instrumentation devices. This breadth not only reinforces the CIM’s capability to prevent failures but also highlights its critical role in maintaining the integrity and operational efficiency of the refinery.
Acelen and Its Commitment to Sustainability
Finally, it is essential to mention that Acelen not only seeks operational excellence but also dedicates itself to sustainability and the energy transition in Brazil. With the asset management of Mubadala Investment Company, Acelen positions itself as a key player in the evolution of the national energy landscape, promoting practices that ensure a more sustainable future.
