With Colder Temperatures and Increased Use of Electric Heaters, Experts Reinforce Mandatory Care with Installation, Grounding, and Maintenance to Prevent Serious Accidents
As temperatures drop in several cities in Paraíba, the use of electric showers intensifies, increasing the risks of electrical accidents. In an interview with ClickPB, Lenildson Santos, health and safety coordinator at Energisa Paraíba, warned that old equipment, poorly installed or without grounding, can cause shocks and even domestic fires. These cases are more common in homes with old electrical networks or irregular adaptations.
Among the main recommendations, the expert highlighted that it is essential to avoid makeshift joints in wires and the use of adaptors known as “benjamins”. In addition, installation should be performed by a qualified professional, with correct sizing of cables and periodic checks of the electrical network. “A shower consumes a lot of energy. If it is poorly installed or with undersized wires, it can cause shorts and shocks,” explained Santos.
Another point of attention is the need for grounding. Small shocks or tingling during bath indicate electrical leakage, which can evolve into serious accidents. “Grounding is the user’s protection. Without it, any failure can be fatal,” emphasized the coordinator.

History of the Electric Shower and Additional Recommendations
The use of this type of heating is a Brazilian peculiarity, as previously discussed here at CPG in “Why Only Brazil Adopted the Electric Shower”. Unlike other countries that use gas systems or central heating, the electric model gained space in Brazil over past decades due to the lower installation cost. However, this popularization demands more attention to maintenance and technical standards to ensure the safety of the equipment.
According to Lenildson Santos, any signs of sparks, burnt smells, or excessive heating of wires should lead to immediate disconnection of the circuit breaker and calling a trusted electrician. Ignoring these signs can result in damage to the electrical network and fire risk.
This information was published by the portal ClickPB, with guidance from Energisa Paraíba, which reinforces prevention campaigns for consumers throughout the state. In addition to the recommendations, the utility advises that periodic inspections and replacement of old showers are essential preventive measures.
