Russian Naval Base In Africa Confirmed And May Impact Global Trade. Understand The Strategic Importance Of This Enterprise In A Privileged Location.

According to Sudan’s Foreign Minister, Ali Youssef, last Wednesday (12), a plan for Russia to receive its first naval base in a privileged location in Africa will move forward after years of postponements and deadlocks around the military port on the Red Sea. With the implementation of the agreement for the Russian naval base in Africa, Moscow joins Washington and Beijing, which have bases in Djibouti, further south.

Russian Naval Base In Africa Will No Longer Have Obstacles

The port of the naval base would have access to the Red Sea, a privileged location, as it is one of the most strategically important waterways in the world, connecting the Suez Canal to the Indian Ocean, with approximately 12% of global trade passing through it.

The announcement came during a visit by Sudanese Chancellor, Ali Youssef Ahmed al-Sharif, to Moscow, where he was alongside Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

After the meeting, Sharif stated that the two countries were in complete agreement on the establishment of the Russian naval base in Africa and that there are no obstacles. After the meeting, the Sudanese minister also said that a new agreement was not necessary, as an agreement was signed in 2020 and there is no disagreement, adding that it only needs to be ratified by both sides.

In 2020, Sudan and Russia closed an agreement allowing Moscow to maintain up to four Navy ships, including nuclear-powered vessels, for a period of 25 years in the African country.

Russian Naval Base In Africa Has Been Under Discussion Since 2017

The idea of a naval base in a privileged location began to be debated in 2017 during the government of Omar al-Bashir, who was ousted in a coup in 2019. Military and civilian leaders in Sudan, however, expressed disagreements with the terms of the agreement and the civil war between the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces and the Army, which began in April 2023, further complicated relations between Russia and Sudan, as Russian mercenaries fought alongside the paramilitaries while the Kremlin supported the Sudanese Army.

According to humanitarian organizations, Sudan is the scene of the world’s worst humanitarian crisis, with the largest internally displaced population. It is worth mentioning that experts point out that the new Russian naval base will not only ease logistical pressure on Russian operations in the country but will also reinforce the Kremlin’s presence in one of the most vital maritime trade routes globally.

According to Youssef’s statements, the ratification of the treaty represents a strengthening of the African country’s sovereignty, which has sought international support to face its internal crisis while balancing security and economic interests.

Understand The Impact Of The Project In A Privileged Location

The initiative of the Russian naval base in Africa is interpreted as part of the Kremlin’s strategy to expand its network of military bases and reaffirm its presence at key points connecting the Mediterranean to the Indo-Pacific.

As the political scenario in the African country remains surrounded by internal disputes and challenges, the decision to proceed with the project in a privileged location may have profound impacts on both regional security and the balance of power on the African continent.

Analysts speculate that the establishment of the Russian naval base in Africa may trigger reactions from the West, intensifying debates over Russian influence and potential economic and military containment measures. Now, the agreement awaits final ratification procedures and should be closely monitored by governments and international organizations.
