The Union of GM and Samsung Companies Will Be a Joint Venture for Batteries for Electric Vehicles with Start of Activities at the Factory by 2026 in the USA
A new joint venture with Samsung SDI and GM will soon arrive in the USA to leverage the capital and technology of both companies and create new competitive advantages for GM. The battery cells produced at the factory created by the companies will be used to power GM’s electric vehicles based on the Ultium platform, increasing GM’s electric vehicle production in North America to more than 1 million units per year. Investing more than US$ 3 billion in building the new factory in the United States and with operations slated to begin in 2026, the Samsung and GM factory will have more than 30 GWh of capacity and increase GM’s total battery cell capacity in the USA to approximately 160 GWh when operating at 100%, according to the website Insideevs Uol.
For now, there is no information about the location of the new battery factory or how many new jobs will be created. However, the companies stated that the number of new positions in construction and operations is expected to be “in the thousands.” The facilities will have production lines to manufacture prismatic and cylindrical battery cells rich in nickel.
The Strategy of GM and Samsung for Electric Vehicles
GM stated that its supply chain strategy for EVs (electric vehicles) is focused on factories that emphasize scalability, resilience, sustainability, and cost competitiveness. A new joint venture with Samsung SDI will leverage the capital and technology of both companies to create new competitive advantages for GM. The battery cells that will be produced in the new facilities will be used to power GM’s electric vehicles based on the Ultium platform.

The introduction of new cell formats will allow us to expand batteries to more segments more quickly and integrate the cells directly into packs to reduce weight, complexity, and costs. With several strong cell partners, we can expand our EV business more rapidly than if we were to do it alone.
The Importance of the Partnership Between Samsung and GM
GM already has a joint venture in the USA with LG Energy Solution called Ultium Cells, while Samsung SDI has a battery joint venture in the USA with Stellantis. A new joint factory venture with Samsung SDI will enable GM to further expand its electric vehicle production in North America and help position the vehicle company as a leader in the electric vehicle battery sector.
The new US$ 3 billion battery factory of GM and Samsung SDI for electric vehicles will be a major contribution to the automotive industry and battery technology. The partnership will allow GM to further expand its electric vehicle production, meet costs, and increase efficiency. The new joint venture will be an opportunity for both companies to leverage each other’s technology and expertise, creating competitive advantages in the electric vehicle battery market.
