Get to Know the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation, Fiocruz Better
The history of the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation, Fiocruz, began on May 25, 1900, with the development of the Federal Soro-Therapeutic Institute, in the Manguinhos Farm, North Zone of Rio de Janeiro.
The foundation was originally inaugurated with the aim of producing serums and vaccines against bubonic plague, and since then, an intense journey has been created, contributing to the development of public health in Brazil.
Under the leadership of Oswaldo Cruz, a young bacteriologist, the Institute was responsible for the sanitary reform that eradicated the bubonic plague and yellow fever epidemics from the city. It soon exceeded the limits of Rio de Janeiro, with scientific expeditions that explored the depths of the country. The foundation was also an essential piece for the development of the national public health department in 1920.
