2,492-Carat Gemstone Is The Largest Ever Discovered In The Country And Will Be Presented To The President This Thursday.
A 2,492-carat diamond, classified as the second largest ever found in the world, was discovered at the Karowe diamond mine, located in the central-northern region of Botswana. The gemstone will be officially presented to the country’s president, Mokweetsi Masisi, at a public event scheduled for this Thursday (22). The discovery was made by the Canadian company Lucara Diamonds, which operates the Karowe mine.
The gemstone, described as one of the largest ever recovered, was identified thanks to X-ray transmission technology, according to Lucara Diamonds in a statement. “We are very pleased with the recovery of this extraordinary 2,492-carat diamond. The ability to recover such a large and high-quality stone intact demonstrates the effectiveness of our approach to diamond recovery,” said William Lamb, president of Lucara.

The Karowe mine, where the second largest diamond in the world was found, is recognized as a world-class asset. First Place Is Held By The Famous “Cullinan” Diamond
In the historical ranking of the largest diamonds ever discovered, first place is held by the famous “Cullinan” diamond, at 3,106 carats, found in South Africa in 1905 and now part of the Crown Jewels of the United Kingdom. In third place is the gemstone “Sewelo,” at 1,758 carats, also found by Lucara Diamonds in Botswana in 2019.
Botswana
Botswana, a country in southern Africa with just over 2.5 million inhabitants, relies heavily on diamond mining, which accounts for about 80% of its total exports. The discovery of the second largest diamond in the world not only reinforces the importance of the sector to the country’s economy, but also highlights the technological capability and operational excellence of the companies operating in the region.
The expectation now is for the official presentation of the diamond to President Mokweetsi Masisi, an event that will certainly mark a milestone in the history of Botswana and the global gemstone mining.
