A 2.492-carat diamond, ranked as the second largest ever found in the world, has been discovered at the Karowe diamond mine, located in the north-central region of Botswana. The stone precious will be officially presented to the president of the country, Mokweetsi Masisi, at a public event scheduled for this Thursday (22). The discovery was made by Canadian company Lucara Diamonds, which operates the Karowe mine.
The precious stone, described as one of the largest ever recovered, was identified thanks to X-ray transmission technology, according to Lucara Diamonds in a statement. “We are delighted with the recovery of this extraordinary 2.492-carat diamond. The ability to recover such a large, high-quality stone intact demonstrates the effectiveness of our approach to diamond recovery,” declared William Lamb, president of Lucara.

In the historical ranking of the largest diamonds ever discovered, The first place is taken by the famous “Cullinan” diamond, weighing 3.106 carats, found in South Africa in 1905 and which today forms part of the Crown Jewels of the United Kingdom. In third place is the 1.758-carat “Sewelo” gemstone, also found by Lucara Diamonds in Botswana, in 2019.
