Products Blocked by 50% Export Surcharge, Such as Açaí and Mango, Will Be Acquired to Supply Social Programs and Armed Forces.

The Brazilian government has defined which foods will be purchased directly from producers. The measure aims to support sectors that have had their exports to the US hindered. A new tariff policy from the US government has impacted several national products. Now, these items will be used to supply social programs.

Impact of US Tariffs on Brazilian Exports

A 50% surcharge on the entry of Brazilian products into the United States has come into effect. The measure, announced by US President Donald Trump, directly affected exports to the US. While the list of exceptions is long, many agricultural products have been impacted. Items such as açaí, mango, nuts, and coconut water were hit by the additional tariffs.

Government Action to Mitigate Losses

In response, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has signed a provisional measure. The text authorizes the government purchase of foods that were not exported. The action is part of a support package. The plan includes R$ 30 billion in credit lines for exporting companies and a deferral of tax payments.

List of Foods to Be Acquired

The Ministry of Agrarian Development and the Ministry of Agriculture have defined the list of products. The selected items were originally intended for export to the US. The list may be expanded in the future. Here are the foods that will be purchased:

  • Açaí;
  • Coconut Water;
  • Caju Nuts;
  • Brazil Nuts;
  • Mango;
  • Honey;
  • Grapes;
  • Seafood (including croaker, snapper, tilapia, and frozen fish).

How Companies Can Participate in the Program

Companies wishing to sell their products to the government need to qualify. It is necessary to present some important documents. One of them is the export loss declaration for the US due to the tariffs. It is also required to prove at least one export to the country since January 2023.

Destination of Foods Purchased by the Government

The acquired foods will have a social destination. The government aims to use them in school meals and to supply the Armed Forces. Additionally, hospitals and food acquisition programs for populations in food insecurity will also receive the products.
