With the new contract, Petrobras and TechnipFMC validate national technology for safe operations in the pre-salt layer.
Petrobras and TechnipFMC have signed a strategic technology agreement to accelerate the development of the Hybrid Flexible Pipe (HFP) — an innovation aimed at overcoming one of the main challenges in the offshore industry: stress corrosion cracking caused by CO₂ (SCC CO₂) in flexible pipelines. The project aims to deliver a definitive and standardized solution for ultra-deep environments, especially in the demanding conditions of pre-salt Brazilian.
Composed of advanced materials such as carbon fiber and PEEK (polyetheretherketone) thermoplastic polymer, HFP technology combines lightness, fatigue resistance and tolerance to highly corrosive environments, while maintaining the operational advantages of conventional flexible ducts.
Testing and qualification of new technology
Currently in the qualification phase, the HFP will be tested with direct support from Petrobras to ensure its performance in real operations.

The aim is to avoid the recurrent replacement of lines due to failures caused by SCC CO₂, which represents a significant operational and financial gain for the industry.
“TechnipFMC is a technology leader and has been a key partner in the success of Petrobras’ offshore operations for decades. Our goal is to transform HFP into a simplified and standardized solution,” said Jonathan Landes, President of TechnipFMC’s Subsea division.
Petrobras' new system will be manufactured by TechnipFMC in Brazil
The new system will be manufactured at TechnipFMC's unit in Porto do Açu, reinforcing the commitment to local content and the generation of qualified jobs in Brazil.
The signed contract follows the technology order model, a form of promoting innovation that allows the government to invest in the development of new solutions with potential for direct application.
This model also foresees the future acquisition of the developed technology, if it meets the established performance criteria, promoting a virtuous cycle between scientific development, practical application and technological sovereignty in the energy sector.
Collaboration between Petrobras and TechnipFMC strengthens the search for safer, more economical and sustainable technologies for the offshore environment, in addition to positioning Brazil as a global reference in innovation in the oil and gas sector.
