The health of Princess Bajrakitiyabha Mahidol of Thailand has significantly worsened in recent days, once again drawing international attention to the succession of the Thai monarchy.

Considered one of the most popular figures of the royal family, the eldest daughter of King Maha Vajiralongkorn has been in a coma since December 2022. The new bulletin released by the royal palace this Thursday (21) confirmed an uncontrollable abdominal infection.

Information reported by People magazine indicates that the princess, known to the Thai people as “Princess Bha”, is facing a severe inflammation of the large intestine. The official statement also informed that the infection has spread and started to affect other organs.

Medical bulletin details critical clinical condition

Data released by the royal palace show that the overall condition of the princess has been in constant deterioration since the last medical update.

Unstable vital signs, critically low blood pressure, severe cardiac arrhythmia, and abnormal changes in blood clotting are among the main complications identified by the medical team.

Dependent on advanced life support, Bajrakitiyabha remains hospitalized under permanent monitoring. Hospital equipment maintains lung and kidney functions while specialists monitor the progression of the infection.

Concerns about the heiress have intensified after confirmation that the infectious condition has begun to affect multiple organs.

Collapse during military training marked the beginning of the coma

The health issue began in December 2022, during a military dog training session in the district of Pak Chong, Thailand.

Medical reports indicated that the princess suffered a sudden collapse caused by an acute cardiac problem. Emergency teams performed an immediate transfer for specialized care.

The state of coma was confirmed shortly after hospitalization. Since then, the princess has not regained consciousness.

The update released this week represents the eighth official statement since the hospitalization. Previous records, published in August 2025, already reported a severe bloodstream infection, according to doctors at the Chulalongkorn Red Cross Hospital.

Succession to the throne returns to the center of discussions

High popularity and strong institutional presence made Bajrakitiyabha one of the names most associated with the future of the Thai monarchy.

However, the severity of the clinical condition reignited speculations about who might take a leading role in the line of succession to King Maha Vajiralongkorn, currently 73 years old.

The name of Prince Dipangkorn Rasmijoti, 21 years old, has started to gain prominence behind the scenes. The youngest son of the monarch, he was born from the king’s third marriage to Srirasmi Suwadee.

Recent movements involving other members of the royal family have also increased political speculations within Thailand.

The return of Vacharaesorn Vivacharawongse to the country in 2023 drew attention after years of absence. The king’s second eldest son has reappeared in discussions related to the future of the monarchy.
