The Federal Revenue has released the consultation for the largest income tax refund batch ever paid in Brazil: R$ 16 billion for 8.75 million taxpayers, 45% above the previous record. The consultation opened this Friday, May 22, and the deposit is scheduled for May 29, in the taxpayer’s account or Pix.
The Federal Revenue released this Friday, May 22, 2026, from 10 a.m., the consultation for the largest income tax refund batch ever paid in Brazil’s history. In total, 8,749,992 taxpayers will receive R$ 16 billion, combining the first batch of the 2026 declaration and residual refunds from previous years. The deposit is scheduled for May 29, the same date the deadline for this year’s declaration ends, directly into the bank account or the Pix key of the CPF type provided by the taxpayer.
The amount is 45% higher than the previous record, recorded in the first batch of 2025, when R$ 11 billion were paid to 6.2 million people. According to the Revenue, this record volume of refunds is due to greater agility in processing declarations and the advancement of modernization and automation tools adopted by the agency. Alone, this first batch already represents about 40% of all that will be paid in refunds throughout 2026, both in values and in the number of taxpayers.
Who has priority to receive the refund
In this first batch, the refund payment is primarily intended for taxpayers with legal priority. Of the total R$ 16 billion, about R$ 8.64 billion will go to these groups, which include seniors aged 80 or older, seniors aged 60 and above, people with disabilities or serious illness, and taxpayers whose main source of income is teaching, i.e., teachers.

In addition to the groups with legal priority, this batch also includes taxpayers who used the pre-filled declaration and opted to receive the amount via Pix, resources that gain preference in the payment queue. The combination of these digital tools with legal priority explains why this first batch concentrates such a large volume of people and values, benefiting precisely those who used the most modern means offered by the Revenue.
How to consult the income tax refund
The consultation to find out if the refund has been released can be done simply through the official channels of the Federal Revenue. On the agency’s website, the taxpayer should access the My Income Tax area and click on the Consult the Refund button. The same service is available on the Federal Revenue app for tablets and smartphones, allowing quick verification via mobile phone.
If the taxpayer does not find their name on the list for this batch, it is recommended to access the e-CAC portal, the Virtual Taxpayer Service Center, to check the declaration statement and see if there is any pending issue that has held the document in the so-called fine mesh. Identifying and correcting any errors is the way to regularize the situation and ensure the receipt of the refund in subsequent batches.
What to do if the payment does not reach the account
The refund payment will be credited on May 29, throughout the day, according to the processing of each financial institution, to the account or Pix key of the CPF type indicated in the declaration. It is important that the bank details are correct and up-to-date, as any error can prevent the automatic deposit of the amount due to the taxpayer.
If there is any problem with the credit and the amount is not deposited, the refund will be available for up to one year at Banco do Brasil. During this period, the taxpayer can reschedule the credit through the bank’s own service channels, including the website, app, or telephone center. If the one-year period expires without redemption, it will still be possible to request the amount through the e-CAC portal, preventing the refund from being lost.
The new batch schedule in 2026
A novelty this year is the change in the payment schedule. The Federal Revenue reduced the number of regular refund batches from five to four in 2026, with payments scheduled for the end of May, June, July, and August. This concentration precisely reflects the agency’s greater agility in processing, which allowed a larger volume of resources to be anticipated right in the first batch.
In practice, this anticipation represents new money entering the accounts of millions of Brazilians at a time of pressure on the family budget. The refund is usually used to pay off debts, rebuild financial reserves, pay overdue bills, invest, or boost consumption, which gives this record batch a significant weight for the economy as well, by injecting billions of reais into family income in a short period of time.
What to expect from the next batches
With 40% of the refunds scheduled for 2026 being paid in this first batch, three payment rounds remain throughout the year, in June, July, and August. Taxpayers who were not included now, especially those who do not have legal priority and did not use digital tools, are likely to receive in the following batches, according to the order of declaration submission and processing by the Revenue Service.
To increase the chances of receiving the refund earlier in the coming years, experts recommend submitting the declaration at the beginning of the period, using the pre-filled declaration whenever possible, and opting for receipt via Pix. Keeping the data correct and avoiding errors that lead to the fine mesh is also essential to ensure credit without delays, taking advantage of the trend of faster refund payments.
The largest Income Tax refund batch ever paid in Brazil marks an advancement in the agility of the Federal Revenue and brings financial relief to almost 8.75 million taxpayers. With R$ 16 billion released and deposited on May 29, the record reinforces the importance of keeping the declaration up to date and taking advantage of digital tools that speed up receipt. It is worth checking the consultation to see if your name is on the list of this first batch.
