Project brings together research centers from both sides of the border
1,050 disused grain silos in EUROACE may gain a new energy function with the THESILO project, an initiative presented in Torremocha, Extremadura, to store renewable surpluses in the form of heat using sustainable and recycled materials.
The proposal targets a common problem in rural areas: unused agricultural structures, the need for productive repurposing, and demand for storage solutions linked to clean energy. The test could guide applications in the agro-industry and nearby municipalities.
Grain silos become an alternative for storing heat
THESILO will be developed in the cross-border territory of EUROACE, which includes Alentejo, Central Portugal, and Extremadura. The region concentrates the grain silos that serve as the project’s foundation.

The initiative is led by the Centro Ibérico de Investigación en Almacenamiento Energético, the CIIAE, within the Interreg VI-A Spain-Portugal Cooperation Program, POCTEP 2021-2027. The total budget is 1,514,396 euros.

Pilot will be validated in Torremocha, in the province of Cáceres
The Torremocha silo will be used as an experimental pilot to test the efficiency of thermal storage systems. The presentation took place at the municipality’s Casa da Cultura, with the participation of Javier de Francisco Morcillo.
The Secretary-General of Science, Technology and Innovation stated that the ultimate goal is to boost business growth and revitalize rural communities, with result transfer capable of generating immediate socioeconomic improvement.

AGENEX, AreanaTejo, Polytechnic of Portalegre, ITECONS, Adai, and INTROMAC also participate. The city council of Torremocha is part of the cooperation, represented by Mayor Isabel Faustina Palomino.
The stages include selection, structural evaluation and adaptation of the silos, research of materials, integration of P2H conversion systems, pilot validation, and regulatory, environmental, technical, and economic analysis. The goal is to verify if existing structures can reduce costs and accelerate energy storage solutions in the rural area.
