However, at the same time, this intense attention ends up hiding something even more impressive: the landscape of Musandam.
Located in the north of Oman, at the farthest part of the Arabian Peninsula, Musandam emerges as a territory that seems to exist outside of time. Physically separated from the rest of the country by the territory of the United Arab Emirates, this peninsula occupies a rare geographical position in the world, which alone would be enough to spark interest. Still, what truly impresses is not just its location, but rather its formation.

Consequently, the result is a rare combination: the dramatic structure of the fjords with the mineral austerity of the Arabian desert.
Moreover, this geography is not just aesthetic. On the contrary, it completely defines how the region functions. Unlike other coastal areas of the world, where the coastline facilitates access, in Musandam it imposes resistance. The water entries are deep, the channels are narrow, and the terrain makes any land movement difficult.
Thus, navigating ceases to be an option and becomes a necessity. In other words, the sea is not just an element of the landscape — it is an essential part of local mobility. Each cove represents a possible passage, each curve suggests a new path, and each stretch of the coast demands adaptation.
Therefore, Musandam is not a place that reveals itself quickly. On the contrary, it unfolds gradually, requiring attention, movement, and interpretation. This characteristic is, in fact, one of the reasons why the region remains relatively unknown, even though it is next to one of the busiest maritime routes in the world.
Between history, strategy, and isolation, Musandam reveals why not everything that is globally relevant is truly known
In the midst of this complex geography, the city of Khasab emerges as a fundamental strategic point. Although it is not a metropolis or a large urban center, its importance is directly linked to its position. Surrounded by mountains and facing the sea, the city functions as a natural support point within the peninsula.
Moreover, Khasab illustrates how human occupation had to adapt to the territory. Nothing there seems to have been built by chance. Each structure, each route, and each space reflects a practical need for survival and circulation in a challenging environment.
This relationship between geography and strategy also appears prominently in what is called Telegraph Island. During the 19th century, this small rocky point was chosen by the British to be part of a communication system that connected India to Europe via telegraph cables.
This fact reveals a fundamental aspect of the region: what seems isolated can, in fact, occupy central positions in global networks. Thus, Musandam ceases to be just an impressive natural setting and also becomes a strategic point within the history of communication and global geopolitics.
Even today, the ruins of this infrastructure remain as a silent reminder that, even in seemingly remote places, global flows have passed through with intensity. Consequently, the peninsula carries not only geological marks but also traces of deep historical connections.
In the end, Musandam challenges the logic of headlines. Although the Strait of Hormuz continues to be in the spotlight whenever there are political tensions or movements in the oil market, the landscape around it remains virtually ignored.
And it is precisely here that the most fascinating paradox lies: one of the most cited names in the world hides one of the least understood geographies.
